GPS tracking

Postby PeoplesHostile on Thu Apr 20, 2006 8:40 pm

Some people like me fear some things and one of these things is GPS tracking. I think this started about two years ago but only recently have I payed much attention to it.
GPS for tracking children hit retail and I think eventually it will move to tracking older people then move to a mandatory chip on everyone.

I can see some benefit from this but I don't like the idea that someone else can find and track me or my family.

do chatter about this...

Yea, they just started the Danger Zone thing where when your child who has a cell phone with GPS wanders into a area deemed dangerous the parental unit is notified by either txt msg, e-mail, or other means. As you said, some good things can occur from having GPS, also like if in an emergancy the abulance can find you, but I also fear big brother always knowing where I am.

you have to specifically have a gps device (most cell phones don't have them) and it has to be on. What's to worry about?

They have been doing this with cars since the mid 90's.

They can already more or less track your cellphone. The only way you can hide is in a major city.

GPS just gets rid of that possibility. Better run, theif.

Incorrect. They can triangulate your posistion (which is extremely inprecise) only if you have certain hardware built into the phone and you actively allow them. Seriously though, all you have to do is turn it off and they can't follow it as well.

Let me reiterate: cell phones don't have GPS and triangulation is a very imprecise way to find someone.

Actually the latest phones do have GPS, even mine does, you can access it, I'll find the instructions on how to but my phone is fucked up right now.

Sorry, meant to put in a modifier: most don't. Some of the newer ones do, but again, it's not something they have access to unless you directly allow it.

How the fuck can I be incorrect when you just said what I said before you?

Just because I don't feel like elaborating doesn't mean I don't know as much as you do.

Actually he said that most phones Don't have GPS in them and believe it or not you can be wrong at times. Shock horror.

As for mandatory chips. I really doubt it will happen. I don't care what the sci fi movies and conspiricy theories say. But the public have a lot of power and i doubt the public would want chips. besides that has to violate some human rights somewhere so i don't think most goverments would allow it themselves.

Forgive me but I found that statement very funny.

You can believe what you want Spartan. Fact is whilst a lot of governments don't mind turning a blind eye to what goes on in their own systems. As soon as they see another country doing it they are amazingly "humane"

Quite frankly i think people really do get too caught up in sci fi and fantasy to know how the real world works.
