Film's Bema should watch before he dies...

Postby Bema on Mon Feb 09, 2009 11:45 pm

A bit of history on my request: I have a rather sizeable film collection that i'm pretty proud of. It's got a decent mixture of genres and it spans around about 76 years of film (thanks to the original Scarface :-) ), but I can't escape the feeling im missing a fair few films I may have in-advertantly overlooked. I'm not neccessarily looking to own every great film under the sun, just atleast give them a watch.

So basically: I want you to suggest some decent films. I'm talking about your 9 & 10 out of 10s; Genre classics; The best of the best. I'm not necessarily looking for old films (although there is a 20 year gap between Scarface & Rear View Window (which I think are my two oldest)), just...really good ones. I'm not oppossed to foreign language films either.

A few words with your suggestion would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

EDIT: Also - I'm not going to die any time soon (that i'm aware of), in case the thread title provokes some sort of reaction from the pessimists here!

First off I would say Coen Brothers Films:

Fargo
The Big Lebowski
No Country for Old Men
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Barton Fink
Raising Arizona
The Hudsucker Proxy
And maybe my favourite: Miller's Crossing

American Gangster is an amazing gangster-movie epic. Kung Fu Hustle is a great action film, it's light-hearted and so not action action intense. I never thought I would like it but I gotta say Smokin' Aces, the story is very good and the action is great too. That's it for action films from me off the top of my head.Casino is a great gangster film also, maybe my favourite of the genre, or closely behind Scarface.Another awesome film is The Usual Suspects, gripping storyline and great acting by Benecio Del Toro and Kevin Spacey among others. Che Part One is a recent favourite, I went to see it a few weeks back and it is amazing, really does justice to the great man, I can't wait for Che Part Two, make sure you go and see that.

As for comedy films I have to say Ferris Bueller's Day Off just because it's a classic. Juno Because it has Michael Cera and Jason Bateman in...amazing together, can't wait for the Arrested Development film. Napoleon Dynamite is a must-see, such unique directing and acting, it's amazing. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy has got to be my favourire Judd Apatow film, watchy it. One of my favourite films of all time has to be Man On The Moon because Andy Kauffman is a god and even though I didn't think he'd be able to do the part justice, Jim Carrey is an amazing Andy, definitely his best acting performance ever, the end will make you cry.

7 Pounds the new Will Smith film is great too, I wasn't sure about it to start off with, but as it went on it got better and better, a nice feel-good film. The Virgin Suicides is a great film by Sofia Coppola, daughter of Francis Ford Coppola the director of Godfather and Apocalypse Now and the like.

As for foreign films, Amelie is just amazing, if you haven't seen it, bah. Angel-A is a really good french film about a suicidal guy who has his life changed around by a woman named Angela...I know but it's better than it sounds, amazing french cinema, funny and intelligent. Pan's Labrynth...just because. Precinct 13 (Banlieu 13) Is a great "free-running" french action film. Taxi 1 2 and 3 are also great french action films that deserve a mention.

Brick. Didn't really know where to put this one but it's amazing, such a good story, the acting is very unique and the script with it's 1920s/1930s stylings make this one of my favourite films ever.

Happy Feet...Oh come on! It's immense!

There are many, many more, that's just off the top of my head and with the few DVDs that are infront of me reminding me, but you gotta watch these. Also I have omitted the obvious ultra-famous movies like star wars etc, these are just the ones that I think you might heard of that you need to.

EDIT: I missed off Being John Malkovich from that list, it is le shiz.

Eurgh Megadude, how could you put Battle Royale on there...it is probably the worst even movie rendition of a book ever made. The book = immense, one of my favourite ever books, the movie = someone defecating on the book.

Oh that reminds me, the original 1960s version of Lord of the Flies is an awesome film.

*Puts fingers in ears and sings out of tune to avoid hearing bad things being said about Battle Royale film*

I kicking myself really REALLY hard in the ass now for forgetten some other brilliant films - Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, (originals of course, not remakes).

Haha, each to their own, I suppose some people like good movies and then there's...you.

Anyway I've forgotten some comedy classics like Hot Shots!, Hot Shots! Part Deux, all the Naked Gun films and Mars Attacks!, good old american slapstick comedy-ness.

Someone suggested Chitty Chitty Bang Bang... do NOT see that film, your life will be changed... for the worse...

ha ha, not saying its a bad film, just saying that when I saw it when I was young I still have nightmares about our finely-fendered friend, and loli-pop whistles.

Hence my thread! Already a few have cropped up that I love, but haven't seen in ages (and had forgotten about). Plus good to see a few I haven't seen yet on the list. :-)

Good work so far Team Interlopers!
