!

That's quite hardcore. The "Jargon watch" was kinda stupid though, he didn't say anything.

And the defrag made me laugh.

Wow that rapes... I wish I had one... Bet it costs a shitload though, SSD's are supposed to drop in cost soon though aren't they?

Wait, SSD's are slow, so they speeded everything up by raiding them right?

So why not just do the exact same thing with proper high-speed drives?

No, SSD's are faster than normal drives.

Once there is more demand for them they should drop in price. If servers hop on the bandwagon then the prices should go down by a bit I assume but I think the servers are a bit skeptical about throwing away thousands of perfectly good HDD's for very expensive ones.

Solid State drives are faster. Conventional HDD's use a spinning disk and read/write heads. While the mechanical movements are very fast nowadays these movements still limit how fast data can be accessed. SSD's have no moving parts so the data is accessed almost instantly.

Actually SSD are retardedly quick compared to the mechanical hard drives we've been using since the 50's. Even the 10,000 RPM drives don't match up to an ssd.

Recently they have started to become viable alternatives to mechanical hard drives and samsung (who make the best HDDs IMO) have been leading the way. They are still a little expensive for how much space you get on them but they are retardedly quick.

They are rapidly dropping in price and increasing in capacity and once other companies start to get in on the action this will go crazy. We are looking at the end of Mechanical drives atm though they wont die out entirely for a while yet.

On the up side if you want tons of cheap storage and aren't looking for speed convention HDD will drop in price along side the rise of the SSDs.

They're like expensive USB sticks.

When they get cheap enough to replace existing Hard drives everyone will use them. Can't wait to be honest, sick of HDs being the bottle neck.

Plus I've had so many fail on me it's not funny.

You also have to consider this is probably RAID0. Granted SSD are supposed to have great reliability, but with 24 of them, I'm sure your odds aren't so good anymore.

What dissapoints me most is that an IT guy would allow the video to say that 2019MB is more than 2GB. Granted, some ass hole producers use the 10^3 to make the disk seem bigger on the packaging, but that, IMHO, is dishonest.

Nonetheless, I wouldn't kick it out of bed. ;-)

What I'd love to see would be single SSD that does the same thing as having 24 disks in RAID . Break the storage on the drive into 24 parts, with a separate controller for each one, and have it connect directly to a PCIE slot via cable. If the controllers are too bulky/hot to fit on a nice small drive, then put them on a separate card - basically the same setup as in the video except you zip tie the cables together and glue the harddrives to eachother... but smaller... of course. (and not as much capacity, so you can fit it in one drive slot)

----------
Edit: I wanted to see how long windows took to boot - to boot. lol.. get it?

I thought so too, but then they might've counted it like normal, not the stupid way.

yay! party!

but it's only a matter of time before my plan for world monopolizing of the worlds natural electrical forces takes into affect and we don't need discrete computing and we can Finnish up on quantum computing, Muwhahahahah!

Wow that's really awesome, now just wait till they can put the memory of the 24 hd's in one hd, or we would have to use an entire closet as case xD
