Introduction time,

My real name is Rob, graduated from uni last year, spent the past year working full time for quite a big computer company.

I've finally decided to go in to a career in computer games but have very limited experience in actual game design, so swallowed hard, have just transferred to part time, with the intention to spend the next year/half-year learning as much as I can, and build up a portfolio. Luckily I've got experience in Graphic Design (Degree), Fine Art, Animation, Music (been in a touring band etc.) and have done a little bit of programming back at college.

Personally I'm very interested in the interactive narrative/story-telling elements of games, having been mostly brought up on Point+Click adventures. I mostly play the usual FPS's... and I'm gonna stop there at risk of boring the entire forum.

Oh, and as shown by my presence here, I'm planning to do most of my learning with the Source Engine, perhaps moving to the UDK in time.

Any way, hey guys, nice to meet you all!

Rob. =]

Hey Rob!

You've definitely come to the right place if your a beginner to game development. Every topic of game development can be found on these forums at some point although it's heavily based around Level Design. If you need anything, just post it on the forum! There are a load of users here who are willing to help =]

I heard about this great solution for any problems you might have with Source. It's called UDK. My suggestion is to go straight to it. If you are looking to build a portfolio, your efforts will be much more rewarded.

To be honest, this man is sort of right.

The rest of us are just too lazy/stubborn/fanboy (Not sure if the 2 last things should be separated) to move to another engine. :smt039

Hey guys, I had tried a few of them: deleting the bin, repairing steam, deleting sourceagent (or whatever it was called) but in the end i just wiped it and reinstalled that worked. I THINK the problem was because I'd moved Source to a separate partition on my hard drive to give it more space. Now i've but it back to the boot partition its going fine.

That's what a few of my friends have said too. I defo want to make some maps for L4D first so thats why I'm sticking to Source, but afterwards I probably will move to using both.

Plus I like Valve's philosophy, so I wanna try and stick by them.

Well TBH it's better to stick with an engine when you've started working with it, if you start switching engines you'll never accomplish anything because you'll be restarting your work and pissing off your team mates.

It's better to look at the options available when you want to start working with an engine. Choose an engine and stick with it for the duration of your project. Right now - as people are saying, the best engine to choose from is the UDK engine.
Source was the best option 2 years ago, but things have changed a lot since then (much to my frustration :F )

I personally go for Vivi's philosophy.

If you can make pretty things in one engine, you make make pretty things in any engine with practice.

So I'm relearning UDK at the same time as Source. S'cool.

Feasibility was not the issue.
