Good morning, makers of worlds...

Postby bleakside on Sat Apr 21, 2012 7:42 am

Hey, I'm a 23 year old ex-student (was studying architecture) and I have been, for a long time, interested in map making. Even when I was a kid in single figure years, I enjoyed making maps to play on Warcraft II more than actually playing the game. I think it's the feeling of creating a contained environment, a world you could say. I have grown accustomed to using Autodesk's 3D Studio Max (of which, as an ex-architecture student, I have a free copy... along with any other modelling program of my choice!) so I am looking to get a free copy of Maya too whilst I can.

I'm hoping to learn as much as I can and, although some may disagree, I think experience and portfolios are much more likely to land me an opportunity than a games design degree. More than anything I hope I can use my increasing skills in 3DS Max to create new objects and thus more original environments. There must be a way...

Anyway, that's me, thanks for taking the time to read all this, and hello!

Welcome!

I hope you will have a good time here and find valuable advice - and I guess you will be able to give a lot of advice concerning 3ds max.

God made the whole world in seven days. Go map a map of the whole wolrd with all physic entities, all visleaves and occluders, fog, weather effects, NPCs and their choreo scenes and be sure you have it done and has no leaks before sunday comes, then call yourself a God :P

Sathor, I hope so, problem is I have no idea how I'd use 3ds max with map making, so the only help I could provide for the time being is very rudimentary :D

Thanks BubbleQ, I'm pretty ambitious so hope to give a lot back :)

Gambini, the benefit of that being I don't have to invent things like the laws of gravity, quantum and thermodynamics, they already exist for me to use, phew!
