Changing player speed for different directions

I was trying to change player movement for the different direction.

I found this in hl_gamemovement:

   float speed = player->MaxSpeed();

   {
      //valve code: forwardSpeed -= speed;

             forwardSpeed = forwardSpeed - (0.1 * speed));




}I tried to change the speed when pressing back to be 10% of the normal forward speed. This compiles but does not have any effect.
