New SDK Update! (monday)

Postby JLea on Sat Jul 17, 2010 12:48 am

On monday!

http://store.steampowered.com/news/4081/

Two years ago Valve hired the talented team behind the popular top down co-op mod Alien Swarm. Since then they have been busy working on the Left 4 Dead Series, and now Portal 2. However, we never forgot about Alien Swarm and the team has spent a lot of time bringing the game to Source in between their contributions to the other Valve projects.

On Monday, July 19th Alien Swarm is going to be released for free via Steam.

In addition to the game, Valve will also release the complete code base for Alien Swarm. This includes updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration. If you’ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production.

Alien Swarm adds 3rd person camera, depth of field, improved dynamic shadows and a wide variety of gameplay additions to the Source engine.

I'm very excited

I'm not to be honest. I'd rather see Valve create new features for the SDK, and most certainly improve on tools that have problems then just spam out new content in hope to develop it's user base for Source engine games..

I suspect it's more like "new code inside the SDK that you can use to make your custom mod".

Not "new features in Hammer".

Well yeah, of course not. They're not updating the old game engines. This new game will have new editor though

I definitely want the DOF, but damn I'll be annoyed if this results in our coders having to restart their code again for the second time in as many weeks.

i'm confused by this. Are they finally releasing the 2009 basecode, or just adding the SDK for Alien Swarm? Also, is Steamworks available to anyone now?

News flash guys, we got it wrong. They aren't updating anything on Mods. It's just for Alien Swarm.

Along with the game get the complete code base for Alien Swarm that features updates to the Source engine as well as the SDK.

It could be either way, this sentence was crafted to either mean we get an SSDK update or rather we get an Updated SDK just for Alien Swarm.
Either way though it should mean we get some nice stuff to hack into mods.

Code-base = C++ code

Right?

Meaning we can implement features from Alien Swarm into our mod code-base, correct?

That seems to be the assured fact, we will get the complete code.
