If i understand him correctly.
He claims that Total conversion mods will be capable of being stand alone.
As in no need for a Source Engine game, but i don't see why Valve would do that unless they include a new license that prohibits selling it.

Quote from Tom Edwards on the hlcoders mailing list:
“It’s a brand new SDK. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... st16106943

Making the SDK separate clears the way for it being absolutely free to *everyone*, without it granting access to existing 2006/2007 Source mods (which mount HL2 content) too. I’m betting that the AS SDK won’t have the normal shared engine content we’re used to from SDK Base, just like UDK only has a subset of UT3’s. “

So just the AS SDK... which i guess i pretty nice.

EDIT:
So no actual confirmation that it makes standalone games, as it would just require AS(which is free of course).
But nonetheless the Total Conversion mods would be capable of moving into the new engine if it proves too hard to move in the new code.

Disappointing from what i originally was thinking, but sounds really cool and might become the modding favorite i guess!

I haven't heard anywhere that you can make standalone games with it... I very highly doubt such a thing, if anything Valve is trying to promote the engine so more developers buy it.

Codebase is likely the same sort of thing the HL2 one is, you get C++ code that can be modified and compiled into .dll files(client/server). Just like every other Source Mod.

Well the quote never even says anything directly about standalone, i figure the idea is that if you make a total conversion using the AS SDK it is kinda like making a free game in that all it needs is an already free to download game.
But in the end its still a mod and in order to use the enhancements you need to put them in yourself.

Although it is Valve...

Ah, I see what you mean. Apparently it was a misunderstanding.

All HL2 mods requires you to buy HL2.
AS mods requires AS to play and AS is free.
