[Request] Nameable Brushes

Postby Sheepish on Tue Aug 10, 2010 5:19 pm

As I do not think there is any fix to the problem asked here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=33423 I think the only option would be a custom brush entity. An entity with all of the lighting properties of a normal, default brush with the ability to set names and give inputs.

Thanks.

You'd need to remake the whole lightmap system to be dynamic. Which isn't going to happen.
Func_brush with cast lightmap shadows set is the closest you can come.

I tried that, but it totally messes up the lighting and makes it look horrible, but oh well then I guess. Thanks.

Yeah, the best way to do full dynamic lighting would likely be parallel split shadow maps or perspective shadow maps. Though I doubt anyone here could create such a system or if we even have access to the part of the renderer to do that.
Have a question related to modding or something I posted? Something that needs staff attention? I haven't been active lately, but feel free to PM me or message me on Steam(link below)

This is more or less impossible.

Seeing as though you want to name brushes, you want them to move / have some custom abilities normal brushes dont have or do. Otherwise, there wouldnt be a need for names.

Source has static lighting, obviously calculated for static brushes. Shadows that dont move when the shadow caster does look even more horrible than no shadows at all.

Source has a completely different lighting system for dynamic brushes, which is quite ugly compared to the static lightmaps. This is what you see and you cannot change it unless you more or less rebuild source. And when you do (some custom shaders or something) you might as well chose another engine cuz source is awesomesauce in static lighting but get owned by even pacman in dynamic lighting.
