Looking for a colaberative solution for a small team

Postby Puffenstuff on Mon Nov 05, 2007 8:27 pm

So my friend and I would like to create a HL2 mod. So our team is just two but we might add a few more. I know from experience with other types of projects that we need to have a centeral space for our ideas, decisions, deliverables, etc. were we can get at them. It has to be online since we are a few hundred miles apart. So what type of solution can you suggest?

From what I gather we need
-A way to colaberate on a design document (I have heard a wiki is good for this but there are aprox. 3.2 million choices)
-A space to share game files, pictures, etc as they are completed. Eventualy we will need to provide alpha/betas to testers. (I assume we should use the hosing on modDB for our final distribution)
-A way to impliment a bug tracker (Mantis seems to be what everyone uses.)
-Eventualy a public website to show off our work (this is further down the road as I would like to have a little to show first)

Constraints/Resources:
-We are not made of munny though I would be willing to spend a little. (Students...)
-Some hosting is available through my school, though I think content is limited.
-I have a powerbook with a broken screen that could be turned into a server if I can get it to work through the protections on the school network.

I am fairly computer savy but I have never taken on something like this so I need some pointers. A pointer to some articles might be nice.

Thankyou all for your help

tbh i dont think you can get around setting up a webserver for the site, then you might as well install some forum (like phpbb, free!), and then a wiki of some sorts (or just use the forums) for the dd stuff. Shouldnt be too hard. As the mod grows though, and the contents increase in size, so must your server grow. and THEN it gets expensive.

Assembla or Elwiki both offer free wiki spaces. It's all you need.

You will NEED, well, want a Subversion server.

You can make do with an ftp space, but I'm telling you a subversion server is a god dammned god send.

Ask Tkaza about G2mods. He's the boss there, and it's free.

It appears that G2mods is not hosting any new sites at the moment. If that changes I'll be there faster than you can say "Holy integrated storage solutions Batman".

We were considering a site that would enable this type of collaboration but funding was terminated. Sheesh

I've used the SVN services at Assembla, which has been great so far. I know they provide Wiki and a bunch of other stuff for managing a team, unfortunately I haven't been able to explore it more.

Best of all, it's free.

Yeah, Assembla really is the best way to go for what you're looking for. They have everything you want.

Can anyone update this? Assembla seems to be down, and elwiki is, and im not working on a mod so I cant use g2. I really just need some sort of wiki/file hosting type thing.

I don't think assembla is down, and it is good.
