Does anyone use Brinkster as their web host?
A friend told me about it, and i was planning on moving my portfolio to them, but it sounds to good to be true :P
So if anyone uses, or has used it please tell me what you think about their service. 8)

One bit of advice - DON'T DO IT! :smt018 :smt018 :smt018

Looking around the internet, the bad reviews far outweigh the good, and the good reviews only seem to come from the freebie account people. Also, while the cheapest package is $4 a month, you are stuck with them for 24 months, so if they do turn out bad, you are trapped.

Remember the saying, "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is". I once bought a "lifetime" hosting package, just for a simple website. Within a year, it had gone, along with the company. It wasn't a lot of money, (about £25), but if loads of people buy into the same thing, the person selling can make a huge amount of money then rip everyone off.

In short, beware of this company. Would be best to shop around, and look at reviews as well as prices.

I would recommend Ace-Host - http://ace-host.net

They are well priced, have 24 hour support and they host Interlopers ;-)

Also, don't always be put off by bad reviews, no one goes onto web hosting forums to say nice things.

thanks for the links :)
It seems that most of the complains are regarding the mail service downtime, but i read that they changed the mail servers and everything is working great since... I might give it a shot, since it's not that much money, and the conditions are better then most of the portuguese hosts.
Just to give you and idea, i used to pay 10€/month for a 3GB hd space and 60GB of bandwith host...

500 GB disk w/ 5TB transfer for 150.000/year  That's pretty damn good aint it?

How are they for complete web newbies? My host is giving me great prices on gameservers, but their webspace packages are embarressingly overpriced...

That means when you have a shared plan you won't have more then 29 of you on one server. I rent a dedicated server from them so I don't have that issue. However they tend to run very fast servers as they recently moved into their own datacentre.

They are very patient with newbies (even I'm crap at the advanced linux stuff) and their support will always help you out. Tis why I've never moved host.

I'm the webmaster of my scout troop's website and we run on a Unix server from http://www.networksolutions.com

Pretty decent prices, great space and bandwidth.

I use 1&1 to host my domain. Hasn't let me down. They only went offline once for a day. Quite cheap! Even got my family using it for their business site.

Sorry, just to clarify, that means that they won't allow more than 29 people to view a webpage, or download a file, or access your server in anyway at once?

Nar, it means your actual website won't be stored on a server with anymore then 29 other of their clients. One of the big things with shared hosting is that some dodgy hosts cram loads of their clients onto one server and then it only takes one poorly written script on someones site to slow down everyone.

By limiting it to 29 they are ensuring that never happens.

Most of these companies are overselling. Basically, that means that they tell you that you get a ton of space and bandwidth for a very low price, but they never expect anyone to actually USE that amount of space. But, when someone comes along with a download center or a really popular web service, the client doesn't worry about it because they believe the company will give them what they offered. However, since the company oversold, they have to terminate the account because they can't really offer that many resources. So, you now have a web hosting company that might have to up prices to compensate for the massive amount of used resources and a very angry customer.

It may not seem like a big deal to you if your site is small. But, I consider overselling to be fraud, which is why I stay VERY far away from any company that offers things like "100GB space/1000GB bandwidth" for less than $20 a month.
