I don't mind the eye tbh, but I might white it out a bit to make it less imposing...also, maybe move it up, so the centre is closer to the header?

I like everything but the leaves on the side. They don't really fit the orange eye theme well.

Also drop those leaves as mentioned before, they really effect the design in a negative way. Just leaving it white or a very subtle gradient would work.

The leaves are gone, I've no idea what i was thinking when i added them, it's plain white as before now.
I've already finished all the CSS and HTML coding, the vertical oriented menu was a pain in the ass to do, since the links will be dynamically generated and there isn't a vertical text CSS option. I managed to do it with some server side code that dynamically "draws" the text as an image which i can rotate in any direction i want, too bad no-one will realize how much effort it toke!
The only thing left to do now is the server side coding, and the CMS. I'm also thinking about changing the way the content is shown since it looks kind of plain now.

Personally, the dark background on the main content is not good at all. I liked the first example you posted. It was very clean and business-like.
