Portfolio Attempt

Postby TheMiede on Thu Dec 04, 2008 6:57 am

Hi there,

I would like to know what you all think of my most recent attempt at a portfolio website for myself.

Image

C & C please, I am not very good with photoshop, or designing websites, but I really like the colors of this, but I think the style could be improved on.

Thanks,
Daniel

The colors are not my cup of tea, but that's a matter of personal taste. More technical is the white lettering on the pale-blue background, which is a no-no if you ask me. Text should have more contrast to be more readable. So either dark lettering, or a darker background.
You should show more content, f.i. how are you going to present images and stuff, it seems hard to fit them in your template.. Will you ad a header/banner like practically all sites have, not saying that you should (dare to be different, but I lacks some visual attraction. Maybe you can make your name on the side more graphic, so it pops out..)
BTW: I like the lettering style, could maybe use a bit more thickness or an even a more outspoken font, but it seems like a right choice for such a setup.

The colours really do clash.

This website has tonnes of inspiration - http://www.smashingmagazine.com/

Yeah, I am not very good at this sort of thing. I'll draw something else up.

Ok, I am working on this wordpress theme. I am about done. I am obviously going for a minimalist look. What do you guys think?

Once again, the colors clash, and the white light effect thingy on the top doesn't look good...

It's just unfortunate that those colours don't translate to the web very well. No point in making your portfolio hard to look at. It's meant to be selling you and what you can offer, the current colour scheme puts me off before I've even read the content.

Go for something a tad more conventional.

Check it now. I updated it with a red black and white theme.

I'll replace the flat colors with images once i get the "oh its not so bad to look at".

First: I haven't seen the intermediate (diving) coloring, but judging from the photo, there could be interesting workable combinations possible.
I think you should try to strike a balance between what is generally considered pretty and your own wishes. What I mean is, that if you want to do a certain color-scheme, because that's what you like and what defines YOU, you should do it, but keep what the general public wants to see in the back of your mind.
The current colors are nice, but I also think they're a proven combination and far from original. So in that sense you would have to try to add details that make it stand out. I'm not trying to push you in any way, but just give you something to think about.

Thanks for the feedback, I am going to be reformatting my website to look more like Psy's and will be going by that article he sent me, it had some great points in there.

You're going to make those enlarge-able, right?

Ya, I am debating whether I should:

A) Open a new window with the full size image
B) Change the current window to have just the full size image
C) Create a page with the same layout but instead of having multiple thumbnails, show the full size image and a back button.

I think C is the best option, but what do you think would be best?
