Where do i start?! :|

Postby mky on Sat Feb 21, 2009 5:42 pm

Can anyone recommend where i could start learning web design? I'm very curious about it as a career, and i want to get a head start on it before college. Any have any idea where i could start? (certain languages, websites, programs, ect.)

depends on which route(s) you want to follow

programming ? php or asp or *.net. And if you need database access, you are bound to go mysql, mssql oracle or any other database you may get your hands on
scripting ? javascript, flash ? perhaps java applets ?
html ? i guess. If so, then you also need css.
For more advanced stuff, you can also learn a fair bit about xml.
When you are up to your neck in shit, keep your head up high

Yeah start off with HTML and CSS then once you have a firm understanding start either PHP and SQL (I suggest MySQLi) or JavaScript and in turn AJAX.

This thread has heaps of tutorials, but I might re-do the list so it suggests which tutorials would be good for people just starting out in the web design world.

Learn how to use HTML properly, as in semantics and valid markup. Combine this with learning CSS. Every web programming language outputs HTML so you need to know that first. Next I would look at Javascript as those 3 languages should be in the toolbox of every web developer.

Yes, definately. Learn it the right way when you start off, then semantics and valid markup will come natural, which is good!

Not sure I agree with you on that point. It really depends on whether you want to be a back-end developer or a front-end developer. Or both.

For back-end, you should definately pick up PHP and an SQL language.

For front-end, JavaScript and then AJAX after some JavaScript experience.

Either route you take, HTML and CSS is a must, like Blink said. I'd suggest taking up PHP over JavaScript just because there are heaps of people who just don't trust it and block it so your hard work is for nothing. And often a JavaScript app when blocked doesn't "fall back" gracefuly. Since PHP is a server-side language, you can't block it.

Personally I think PHP is more fun than JavaScript. But your choice :)

Yeah but, Javascript is different to PHP so it's not like you can use PHP just because someone has JS blocked, as they both do different things. Every backend developer I've worked with knows JS and it's pretty essential. Even just to get an understnading of it

You say people don't trust it, but a lot of people use Facebook and that's off it's tits on AJAX. :P

I would still recommend HTML, CSS & Javascript. But see how you get on :)

Haha :P

I'm assuming people use NoScript. People trust Facebook so they allow it. Say they go to your site, by default the JavaScript is blocked. They may never allow the JavaScript.

Yeah, that's true.

It all boils down to what aspect you want to do :)

Good luck!
