cs_crystal_lake

It’s Friday the 13th at Camp Crystal Lake. Eight corpses have already been found in what has been called one of the most gruesome crimes in recent history. Local police authorities have gone unresponsive at the crime scene and Federal counter terrorist forces have been dispatched to recover any survivors at the camp and eliminate the terrorist force wherever it may be.

This map is in the spirit of the Friday the 13th movie series and set at Crystal Lake. A couple of the locations, the barn and house at “Higgins Haven”, were designed off of scenes from Part III. My goal was to create a fun horror themed map for CS:S that could be played around Halloween or on Friday the 13th!

A night setting was used and there is very little light other than a few building lights and pale moonlight. Because of this, seeing and locking on to opponents is much more difficult than traditional CS:S maps. However, that doesn’t make this map unplayable. Instead of relying on lightning quick headshot reflexes, players will be forced to think strategically about routes, key control points and how best to use the darkness to their advantage. Nightvision is now something worth spending a little cash on.

For those of you too lazy to download, you can now see my map through this youtube video someone put together. I didn't have anything to do with the video but it shows you many parts of the map.

Thanks man. I was starting to think that the lack of comments meant that the map was neither good enough nor bad enough to evoke reponses. Glad you like it!

Haven't played it in a few months, but we did use it several times before and around Halloween. Gameplay was pretty good and people had a lot of fun. The only real issues with it are (1) there is only one quick way between the two hostage areas, to go by the beach; this makes gameplay somewhat predictable in that CTs will push one side or the other, then go between the buildings, then take the other side back to rescue, and Ts trying to get behind the CTs is not really done much because by the time you get there they're already halfway around the other side of the map, (2) some parts of the map are too dark, enough so that even with NVGs you get no illumination (i.e. these areas are pitch black); the one that sticks out is to the (CT) left side of the front porch of the left cabin, often times people would sit by the stump or rock there and be pretty much invisible to players coming from that side, (3) there are a few places where you can get on the displacements that are against the sides of buildings, and somehow people are able to wiggle their way up and get on top.

The various booby-traps and things that burst into flame are neat, but they get old after about the second time and so are not really a benefit to the long-term usability of a map.

The music could be a lot lower where it plays; sounds that are just quiet enough that you have to pay attention to hear them clearly make for a better effect most of the time, and the loud music can be distracting.

Off the top of my head, this is the best Halloween map I can remember playing. If you're thinking of making adjustments to it between now and this fall, let me know and I'll go through and try to give some more detailed notes on it.
