The trees would cast perfectly acceptable shadows if he used texture shadows on them. Of course, he'd have to set the lightmap scale on the ground near any of the palms to around 2 to get decent looking shadows.
Alternatively, he could just port this to CSGO and use the new cascade shadow mapping to do all the work for him. It'd look better anyway since the shadows would cast on models as well.
