You can still do it without that shader. The only difference is that you'd be limited on how many textures you can blend per face. The other thing is that you'll need a nice blendmodulate texture too, but that should be pretty straightforward.

Specifically I chose the blending method because it cuts down on the brush cost, normally I slap a puddle texture with a scrolling normal map on a func_brush with it's solidity set to off. However I wanted puddles everywhere, and func_brush wouldn't have been very affordable at that scale.
