Speed Challenge #9 - Vote & Final Images

Postby Jest@ on Wed Jun 25, 2008 11:19 pm

Okey, it's finally here! Sorry for the wait, I had to wait for a PM reply from an entrant, and I've had a few shitty days in row.

Some awesome entries of all flavours here, everyone was pretty much within the time limit which is impressive, there's some solid stuff in here! Hopefully now you all have ripe little WIP files to be cracking on with :P If any of you do finish up any of these models, don't forget to let us know over in the modelling subforum.

Thanks to everyone who took part, and hopefully we'll see you all again this weekend for #10. Don't forget to go crazy in the Suggestions thread with, well, suggestions.

Time to vote, don't forget to click on the images to see them at full resolution. You can also see them all together at the photobucket album

I went for Mr. Happy because, well... Do I really need to explain? It's like something Duke Nukem would use...

My vote goes to the awesome 92FS. That USP came pretty close to getting my vote though. :D

I voted for Mr. Happy because it's so f*cking badass, but Stoopdapoop was a very close second, I think its a very well done model.

Stoopdapoop has my vote. Nicely detailed and something I want to be able to make after my 3DS max book arrives tommorow >_<

Mr. Happy got my vote for god damn awesomness. RotatorSplint and Stoopdapoop have made some really detailed models. I wish I was able to come up with such cool stuff in such short amount of time.

Same here. Not only is the model perfect, it was made in only an hour. Less actually, if you don't count the second render he did.

I wish I could have voted for Mr. Happy and Stoopdapoop, but this infernal poll doesn't allow it.

I like Rotator splint's.

@Deathmonkey: Interesting piece, but you don't have a wire up so I can't really comment on that, mesh looks clean, but it lacks detail, you had 20 minutes left, you could have put in some knobs, switches and/or a handle in that time.

@Mr. Happy: HA! way over the top, Plus points for originality, I can tell you right now that if I were modeling without reference and had to make it up as I went it'd take me a very long time, so I can appreciate you creating such an overkill weapon. Meshwork looks clean but it's somewhat low poly, it wouldn't have taken much more time to smooth out the cylinders. Rendering tip: this model may benefit by completely bypassing the phong shader all together, try plugging the ambient occlusion shader directly into the surface option, it might hide the low polygon count a bit, just make sure you make the bright color darker and the dark color ligher, and be sure to add transparent geometry around the scene so that the gun shades a little better (like the grid I have positioned under my pistol).

@Nauz: The design is unique but in the end the model feels like a bunch of primatives tossed together, you can see that most of them aren't connected to each other, and are intersecting very deeply into other ones. I do like the heat gaurd (or whatever purpose it serves in real guns) in the front of the barrel though.

@Rawmeat: the artillery idea is cool. I really like the protected dome so it can be aimed, what would have made it perfect would have been a screen somewhere in front of the seat, but hey. Also from the looks of it, it wouldn't be able to tilt too far back because the base is large and the back extends far out :D but that's just a minor issue, the model is cool and I like the little things you added on like the lift hooks.

@RotatorSplint: Ah this is what I can really go for, tried an true sidearm. Not the most difficult pistol to model, but your model is well crafted, clean, and has most visible parts (missing a hammer), the rear safety is kinda dull and the front aiming hair is a bit short, but other than that it's great and has earned my vote. Also it's a shame that you've gotten almost everyone' s honorable mention, but not a single vote untill mine :(

@Sfisher: interesting gun you've chosen, the model is well done and it's very visually appealing, it is sort of flat though, that's not a problem with the model as much as the concept but that makes it significantly easier to model. Also I'm not sure what it is, but something about the triangulation looks odd to me, maybe it's all the very long triangles. But overall it's a good model and it was finished in about an hour, but I'm not sure how much more you could have done with another hour to work on it (because of the simplicity of the concept).

@Stoopdapoop: Model is perfect, there's nothing wrong with it in any way shape or form, but I've come to expect it from you. :D

@Surfa: It's a good start but... AHHHHHH what the hell? Why'd you stop? I really liked where it was going and had you worked on it for another hour it could have been really kick ass. Not to say it isn't kick ass, but it but you could have softened some edges, added more detail and just generally pimped it out. Judging from the video you posted, you certainly know what you're doing it's a shame you didn't take out to the full 2 hours.
