Speed Challenge #10**EXTENDED** - Gadgets, Past & Future!

Postby Jest@ on Sun Jun 29, 2008 10:28 am

Update: I've extended the battle till tomorrow evening to give some possible contestants a chance to get something in. Click here for the new finishing time around the world.

Sorry it's a little late, something came up yesterday.

This Speed Challenge is to model Gadgets - by 'gadgets' I really mean consumer electronics, things like video game consoles, mobile phones, stereos, these kind of things. The catch is, it can't be anything that's currently in production, or still quite recent - rather, an old classic, or a future vision. Show us what the Playstation IV is gonna look like, or give us your take on the future of mobile phones, or remind us of the graceful curves of the Master System II, or, remind us of the existence of the NeoGeo, or show off your from-memory recreations of your beloved BBC Micro :)

The time limit for this one is 2 hours. Remember, its just meshwork, no unwrapping or texturing is required. The deadline has been revised - see above.

When posting your entry, remember to give us:
- A render
- A wireframe
- Tri count
- Time spent creating the model

We recommend that you post your final images using a clay render. Check out this excellent tutorial from game-artist.net to learn how to do it with maya and 3ds max.

The full rules for the Speed Challenges can be found here

Remember, the time limit is for you to challenge yourself - show us the best you can do in that time. You can take a tiny bit longer, but it's in your interest to play fair & level. The whole point of this is to improve your skillz0rz.

As always, if you've got a question, lemme know

Sorry I was going to enter this one but 3ds max decided to die on me as i was saving so i have a corrupted file anyway doesn't look like many people bothered anyway.

btw: Looking for a new easy to use 3d package (cheap) hopefully cause 3ds max had died on me for the last time I have decided to learn something new.

You say cheap, meaning it seems you are willing to pay. I would suggest XSI (big suprise) the foundation edition (which is a fully fledged version but missing a few advanced features intended for movies that you will never use) is only $500.

I may still enter this, but I dunno. Maybe more people will enter if the deadline is pushed back another day? I don't want to be the only one to enter tho!

I'd like to make something, but I have no good ideas. If the deadline gets extended, I'll think harder.

Yes believe it or not i am willing to pay for this software (not a great fan of piracy) I check the prices of xsi and I think now it will be a toss up between XSI and Modo.

I hear modo is good but not as good as the more standard programs like XSI, 3DSMax, or Maya

EDIT: Thanks Jest! I will definitely enter now so long as I don't get dragged to the bars tonight. I forget, can we enter two things? I have two ideas (one sixties James Bond futureistic hi-tech style, one truly futuristic style)

Hm, gonna have to keep it to one primary object I'm afraid.(although additional, secondary stuff like a controller for a console would be fine)

I started this at about 4:30 in the morning, realizing that 6 pm GMT would pass while I was asleep
(I think...I'm not very good with timezones), so I got up and churned this out. Made and rendered in 1 hour 14 minutes and with 1250 triangles.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go close my bloodshot eyes for a few hours.

Okey, time's up I'm afraid. If anyone was just about to post an entry, get it to me by PM, but I won't be able to accept anything that doesn't arrive pretty soon.

If RawMeat's the only entrant, 10 points are his! If not, we'll have a quick vote.

Voting has come to halt on the Speed Challenge #9 entries, so I'll be updating the ranking and whatnot later tonight.

Tune in on Saturday night for Speed Challenge #11! Keep your suggestions coming!
