Speed Challenge 13 - Gardening

Postby RawMeat3000 on Sat Mar 21, 2009 8:51 pm

Ahh gardening. Tomato vines, and flower beds. Ditches and hoes. In this one we're going to model something related to this highly relaxing passtime. Now when I say gardening I mean the kind you do in your backyard, no industrial stuff like silos, or combine harvesters.

As usual, your target time is 2 hours. Post renders, wireframes, poly counts, and time spent here. Texturing is not allowed, and use only one material for your entire scene.

I think that pretty much covers everything, maybe as a bonus, try to keep it under 5,000 polygons? Not a rule, but since the next battle will be a poly limit, it may help to get used to constraints.

Good luck everyone.

Deadline is around 8 pm Monday GMT.

I'll try and enter, not sure what to model though... Nothing in gardening is really exciting.

I'd love to enter, but I have no fucking clue what to make.

You don't mess with Monster Mowa!
Polys: 1 669
Time: Excluding the constant interruptions, about 2:20.

The grass shoulda been emo afterall.

PS: The wireframe render is not that good. For some reason, whenever I fallback to Default scanline after using mental ray, my renders are completely fubar. I had to edit it in GIMP to increase contrast, or you couldn't see it. (most likely I am just missing something obvious in my settings, but oh well.)

For anyone having trouble thinking of something to model, how about a shed, with a few bags of fertilizer stacked beside it, and a shovel standing up against it? A green house, potted plants, shears and clippers, and all the different plants you can think of. Or the inside of a shed, with it's many tools and workbenches. It's a theme most of us, including me, aren't really familiar with, making it almost necessary to find references, which is a good habit to form.

To be honest picking this theme was probably a mistake, but let's all try to make the best of it, eh?

Here's a WIP, 50 minutes in and I'm already at 4802 polys.

Thought I might as well enter but didn't have any modeling software installed except for the xsi mod tool. This cause problems for me as I have only really made 4 models in xsi and only 1 was any decent but oh well. Also I only had like 20 minuets before I had to leave for the day so it is kinda rushed and rubbish.

It's a turfer, or top soil breaker, had one in the garage so I did it from memory. Bit like a lawnmower with blades in a different place really.

It's about 3000 polys, and took me 2hrs including render time and enjoying-the-cricket time ;)
