Poly Limit Challenge 2 - Plush

Postby RawMeat3000 on Mon May 04, 2009 1:23 am

Plush. I know it sounds a little fruity, but these challenges have mostly been video game themed, with us making locales and props you'd see in the average FPS. Most of the models have also been very inorganic with hard edges and sharp angles. Well now you get to make something a little different. Something smoother and more organic. But it must be distinctly cute and huggable, there is no sidestepping this. Hopefully the 1000 triangle limit will be enough.

Post a render and wireframe in this thread, and optionally the amount of time you spent creating.

The official rules can be found here, but are still a work in progress, so if you have any suggestions for change, let me know. Also, I'm officially allowing the use of colored lights and one 256 x 256 texture map. With anything you like in the alpha channel.

I'll run this challenge for 5 days, so it will end very late Friday night GMT on the 8th (technically on the 9th), or Friday afternoon Pacific Standard time. For more time zones, please see this.

Plush companion cube wishes you luck!

I'll be entering. Does anyone have any good lighting tutorials for Max? I've never really looked anything up on it.

Well that's just a clay render, I know how to do that! I guess the lighting is just trial and error though, I'll figure it out.

Spy sappin' mah links!

I was about to give that one as well :P

I've found out that if you have wacky polys and some smoothing isn't rendering properly, mental ray AO render is the way to go because everything is smoothed perfectly. (I have no clue how and why, but it does.)

Here's the tut I used for the latest poly challenge: http://www.everflow.com/support/tutoria ... sion1.html

I think I'll be entering this one. At first I thought I'd be using XSI for this one since I prefer it for non-sharp edges, but then I found the PolyBoost plug-in for Max 9...

/uninstalls XSI

do you mean increasing the amount of polys with one button? in XSI you can do that by pressing "+". ?_?

Nah, PolyBoost is basically the Graphite Modelling thing in Max2010. You can do all sorts of stuff with it but the best part is the Proportional modelling and Symmetry. That was just about the only thing I liked in XSI and the reason I would choose it over Max for character creation. With Polyboost, I can do similar things in Max. :-D

I actually used to have one of those. It found it's way into a fire while we were camping though... We were seeing what happened when certain things went into the fire.

DON'T DO IT! YOU HAVE YOUR WHOLE LIFE AHEAD OF YOU!

And source-maps, that's pretty nice. Makes me want to add texturing to these battles.
