Just a map i started an hour or two ago. No bomb target or hostages, so basically an FY map without the stupidity. Its all outdoors and long distances in most areas, so weapon restrictions would be very handy. Ive finished the layout and tested it by myself. theres a few bugs to iron out but i was just wondering what everyone thinks.

I think a heavy emphasis on weapon restrictions, like only being able to use one or two different guns, would make this a pretty versatile map for training with certain guns or whatever. C&C welcome.

I can tell you first hand that map file will large due to all the displacement mapping. The floor/sand does not merge well and look like the rock are stickup out the ground. Brown rocks don't make white sand. You should look for a darker sand texture. I really think you need to find 3 textures to work in for alpha painting. Rock/sand and sand/underwater sand. You should angle your sky light so the half the canyon is bathed in sunlight and the other half is darker, but not so dark you can see the walls.

yea i havent finished the textures yet. i was looking for a blend sand/rock texture that would suit the rock models and thats the only one i could find. it doesnt look too bright, but ill keep looking. i dont want to get into custom materials, cause thatd just be more to download.
Speaking of that, the file size is only 5.5mb, which i rekon is pretty good considering its basically all displacements. theyre all on power 3.

Actually dude this looks pretty good.
I think creating this in such a short time is rather impressive...
What I think is odd is actually the water. I mean, this is a desert canyon, so what's the water about? Y'know?
Keep it up, could be a nice fun map

yea try the second links. the first ones are with ripway, who have a download limit. the second ones are with imageshack.us, who dont.
About the water, i didnt really think that it was a desert, because it originally wasnt. it was all white cliffs and grass, but i changed the textures to go with the models. one of my friends who dropped round said to put water in, so i did and it looked pretty friggin cool despite the fact that its in the desert.
i could always make it raining? it did snow in the sahara desert a few decades back.

Bit of an update. ive added fog and dead trees. i rekon the fog could be a bit darker but advice on that would be handy. im pretty happy with the placement of the trees, except for one of the oak trees i need to lower a bit.
I thought teh tops of the cliffs looked shit, the way they were all uniform height, so i went around and teethed them up a bit.
Textures still need work, but ill do that next.

hmmm i think if you style round the water a bit more, with foliage, maybe a palm tree or two etc, it'd look cool....some of those smaller areas with rock outcrops could be great fun for close-up fights....maybe it was just the knife in the shot, but pic #5 made me think....KNIFEFIGHT!!!

for a few hours work, its nice, dude! much work to be done of course

fuck valve and steam right in the fuckin arse!!!!!!!!! i did ~ 2 hours work on it, hit ctrl + s and it crashes. motherfuckers, cant they makes something wihtout any major fucking bugs????????

anyhow, during these 2 hours, i did the alpha maps on all the walls, put reeds and shit around the edges of the water, did a 3d skybox, tweaked the fog and random other shit like that. if i can be bothered ill redo all that shit tonight.

for most of us, it has become instinct to hit "ctrl+s" every 2 & 1/2 mins, AT THE LEAST!
