I wish I knew about dev textures to start. I always have a terrorist on my map that I drag around to use as a yardstick.

GRRR!!! I cannot stand my map anymore! I AM starting over! It went so against my plans, i think ill draw a completly new map too!

just im not using dev again it just ruins the feel of my map when i try to look at it, i just cant consentrate wiuth dev.

lol i still do that and im on my like 6th map (that includes group projects like ts_rats_legos.. and also includes 1.6 maps that ive never released cause their god awful. )


I will start using dev texture next map I make... Maybe :P

I AM WARNING YOU DO NOT USE DEV TEXTURES! THEY RUIN YOUR PLANS AND MAKE YOU HAVE NO FEELING FOR YOUR MAP AS YOU BUILD IT! INSTEAD DO IT MY OLD WAY, NODRAW FOR SIDE WALLS, TEXTURE IT IMMEDIATLY! THEN ADD FLOOR WITH NODRAW, TEXTURE, THEN CELING! THEN WALL DETAILS THEN ADD LIGHTING THEN ADD PROPS, DO THIS PER ROOM YOU DO, AND FINISH THE ROOM BEFORE YOU CONTINUE, BECAUSE ITS HARD TO GO BACK, AND ONCE YOU FINISH THE BUILDING OPTOMIZE IT IMMEDIATLY.

dev textures are a no-no and when you have to go back and make them nodraw THEN texture it is unnessary work its is very bad way to do it.

What i do is that I work on one room then expand... like in cs_boa i started the main lobby of the bank, then the bank finished, then i did the street outside, then i did the building surrounding so... ect ect

One problem with that is that the map can get a bit ugly if you dont do it right :?

How could it be that bad going back and retexturing it....
I think it would help you notice which ones you should do nodraw on. Just make sure texture lock isnt on when texturing tarrain/streets/buildings

Just because you are unable to map with dev textures doesn't mean we can't.

What kind of person uses nodraw? Faces that are against the void and other brushes aren't drawn anyway.

well, you need to learn that your maps wont always look perfect in valve hammer... simple enough really, dont expect a masterpiece in hammer, just frequently test play.

GUH! i am so fustraited right now! i just cant think of anything anymore, my mind went blank. i dunno what im gonna do as a good map, plus spring break is over today!!!!

i am so mad now ill have to go back to school and then not map. god! this shows what a nerd i am, but im not really :) i dont look like a nerd, just have a mind of one.

i want to make an amazing map, one that just stuns the eyes, one thats very complex. a very detailed looking city or something, just i feel like crap right now.

as regards dev textures, i use them when they're useful. Door measurements, wall measurements sometimes, texture placement on things I havent decided on a texture yet etc etc.

As regards the theme for your new one....pick a theme that isn't immediately obvious given the HL2/CS:S textures. All the ones you listed easily match to existing texture sets, try and find one that doesn't. Then you'll have to work really really hard to find good textures and you'll probably be encouraged to use custom ones.

That way your map will really stand out from the rest visually.
