2Fort (Yes..) Fortress Forever remake (Source)

Postby Mitchell on Tue Apr 12, 2005 12:23 am

Now, I know by 'remaking' a map I'll probably get a bunch of shit off you lot, but I'll have to shove through it and hopefully get some decent feedback.

I don't expect any major feedback as the thing is still 'work in progress', but I'm going to be working on it tonight, tommorrow and wednesday afternoon, and I'll hopefully have some sort of complete map.

I'd give a .BSP to play about with but I am not in the mood to build walls/sort out leaks just yet.

Anyway.. as its a remake, remember I'm trying to stick closely to the original without going over the top. I'm also trying to keep the thing simple and not too advanced, a lot of people aren't using the best graphics cards, myself included (6600GT AGP) so I'm taking into that people want a decent frame rate while tons of actions kicking off.

So far the maps taken about 2 days, in this time I've been relearning Hammer and learning how the Source engine works basically.

any/all opinions/comments/feedback is welcome, if you feel you HAVE to flame me, go ahead.

anyway..

(Sorry if this stuff isn't welcome here :) I'm hoping it is.)

Edit: I'll be uploading mroe pictures here as the thing gets more and more completed. I figured I'd put it up now as people may be able to spot/notice/give feedback at this stage.

currently in the middle of redoing a lot of areas. The map should (well, it has to be really) be completed by 28th April. I will update this thread when I have more to show and a finished version.

proportions look way off. try decompiling the original then alt-tab between hammer 3.5 (with the old one loaded) and hammer 4 (with your new source map) to get the correct proportions. Also, use garbage. the map needs mad garbage. trust me. use texture overlays (good trash decals, texture browse for garbage) and props from the junk props folder.

I've been using the info_player_start to try to determine player width and give them space to move about, could you tell me which parts look way off?

Wasn't the BSP decompiling tool considerd evil by the mapping community ;P I hadn't thought of that method, I've been running TFC in window mode ontop of Hammer.

I love Team Fortress Classic

Unfortunatly, there is a mod coming out called "Fortress Forever".....well not unfortunatly, it looks like its going to be sweet.......moving on. So they are making this map also......

However, looks like a really cool HL DM map.......or maybe make it for the HL2 Capture the Flag Mod. Although I have never played it, it seems popular enough.....

Do not let this all discourage you, I would still like to see the end results. One question........will your map have the underwater tunnels?

I'm doing the whole lot mate :) I plan to get the basics done, then build it up. I'm hoping to, somehow, surpass the one being made for Fortress Forever somewhere down the line.

*dreams* anyway..

yea, I plan to add some sort of stairs and lift near the old spiral, a bit of difference and modernism. a slow lift won't exactly be an advantage, just a bit of fun.

the actual entrance will be some sort of burst water pipe that leads through into the sewer, where the actual lift/stairs go to, their bottom floor if you will. it won't make exact real-life sense but it should be somewhat beleiveable.

I'm going for a sort of modern fantasy theme, same basic layout of the original but with more added things and 'locations', like the hospital-style spawn room.

Looking great, I love how you've made it feel more organic (if you get what I mean). The bridge is a little too long though :P

Nice to see your adding your own style to the map rather than copying it, block for block, the bridge looks cool but some of the textures dont wrk for me if their the ones your using.

Best method for exact sizing is to decompile the map and open the .map in Hammer 4.0. You can check the sizes then.

and what exactly can i use to decompile the map?

i remeber there was an app called Winbsp.exe or something or other which handled HL, Q2 and Kingpin or something.

link to one would be appreciated :)

Edit: Found an App on fileplanet, so ignore. (BSPTwomap.zip)

Yea the blue textures are temp, the others i'm not entirely set on, i just placed them while creating it.

i'm trying to stick to the concrete/metal-holdings theme though, figured it'd be more realistic as a bunker.

I've played a version of 2fort for HL2DM and I think it was quite well done, you could look to it for some inspration also.

Apparently that map wasn't made by the Fortress Forever team.
If you've got a copy, could you PM me and I'll give you an email, if its no trouble of course.

I'd like to make sure I'm not going to accidently copy the achitecture, plus take a gander at what they've done :)
