HL2 Sniper Rifle (Updated)

Postby Jest@ on Wed Apr 20, 2005 2:56 am

Helping a mate out on a story-focused HL2 SP mini-mod...at one point his (very good) story requires a bit of sniping that the Crossbow wasn't up to, so...we're throwing in a sniper rifle!

I'm modelling, skinning and coding it atm, wanted to post some progress shots of the model. I'm pretending to be looking for constructive comments/criticism, but really i just wanna show it off cos i'm pretty proud of it so far!!! :P

yeah the butt etc is an amalagation of about 3 rifles' butts, with the hole in the back made extra large...so it's a bit of a mutant ;) and i'm prolly gonna curve the very back at the bottom quite a bit.

Very nice, but I agree the butt of the gun looks strange. I have shot some big guns and I would not shoot that. A curved butt like that would slide down under you arm if it has anough power. You want to have it straight up and down to be flush on the shoulder. It seams should be a little rounder too. You want a nice place to rest your cheek on to eyeball down the scope.
Also, IMO, I think I you have a little too much detail in the model, like the groves, that could be handled by textures and normal mapping, if the ploy count is really high. How many ploys is that anyway?

If that's the COMBINE sniper then someone made one a while back that looked awesome. It had the "Combine"-design to it.

Anyway, the model looks great. Be sure to get some ... cousy ... sounds to it.

-make the bolt pully back thingy beefier
-make the butt more perpendicular to the gun
-move the butt a bit higher up, looks too low for the scope
-put a flash spreader on the end of it like an m82a1

other than that it is teh sexxah. nice job!

what program are you using?

only problem I see is that the bolt handle should be bigger and pointing down more, and the butt should be higher and longer.

cheers for comments, very very useful! Yeah, i'll restart the butt from scratch, there is meant to be a chinrest space on there but it's not particularly obvious. Might add some padding.

This render model weighs in at about 25000 polys...AAAARGH!!! When properly meshed and optimised that cuts down to about 1200 for the world model (which will be lowered when I re-model some bits) to about 800-100, and about 2500 for the viewmodel. I think that roughtly matches the HL2 guns.

as to design and looks, it's not meant to be combiney or futuristic at all. it's only for the player to use, and given the setting for this mod (don't think i'm allowed to reveal story stuff yet) it should be ok stylistically.

hmmm yeah the bolt does look a bit pussy, doesn't it.....hmmm...tricky.

edit: entrely made and rendered in MAX 7

It looks really good. You've done a great job with the curves on around the trigger.
