Postby NSkeepitG on Sat Apr 30, 2005 10:07 am

Hi, guys

I only jsut starting mapping yesterday but Ill show you what Ive done so far.

I was trying to copy the set for the Aliens film and this is one of the standard corridors. Its not quite finished yet but its getting there. Im usuing SDK loaded for HL2 DM.

http://www.brywright.co.uk/nsforum/inde ... st&id=1365

I used to map for Duke3D way back, and loved it, spent a year doing it, and now I wana get into making them for HL2 mods. However I dont really know what im doing so, expect to be annoying at me asking millions of noobs questions.

lol, tbh I have no idea what a func_detail is or does.

I really dont know what im doing apart from making brushes and texturing them. But I wana learn definatly. Just a shame its not quite as simple as Duke3D was.

Sector effectors ftw!

Seems like you're learning pretty quick, good stuff. Keep with it! once you've g0ot a bit further and got more of an idea about the process, the tools, the requirements etc, then Zombie@computer's optimisation guide in the tutorials section is an absulte must. Read that, all will become clear!

You owned my first day of mapping

Keep it up, it looks good. My advice: read through the tutorials, doing as many of them as you can. I've learned a lot through them. You'll see that some tutorials will teach you how to do things that don't have tutorials. And as was said, check out the optimization guide. Before I read it, I didn't even use nodraw, func_detail, and I carved with cylinders.

Yeah, getting inspiration from other stuff and imitating architecture is a great way to get started, and even when you're really good, it's still a great method for creating levels. So, not a bad start, but I would definitely look at changing the textures, since textures are vital elements of mood, and it's not very moody yet. But great start.
