I think it's fairly widespread that programmers have it hard when it comes to writing a guide to their own software because they've never approached the finished product from a position of ignorance.

Here's a new version, with Hammer-like arbitrary scaling and a cylinder tool added.

You don't need internet to use the SDK...

:D Hey Shrinker. It's nice to meet you man, awesome work on your Microbrush 2.
Here's a new version, with Hammer-like arbitrary scaling and a cylinder tool added.

I was excited to get your new DL, but on your downloads section it's still listing the old version "Microbrush v. 2.0.0 @ 2009-11-01".

 Btw, you had perfect timing with the release of v.2.0.1 I had put an article up on the GPC website just last night, which isn't officially launched until 01-01-2010.

Your article is located here: Abe's Microbrush 2 article on GPC

I made sure to site links to your various resources at the bottom of the post.

 Many of these suggestions have already been noted but I would like to offer a tally mark for a top down view.

Oh and one thing I would promote the hell out of for you, would be a standalone top down 2d editor that exports .maps. There used to be one called Revolver but it doesn't work with Source SDK. It could just take the 2d entities and export them as 32 unit high brushes, or any size you chose. If you'd like a link to the old revolver app I could find it for you with some rummaging.

:?: I do have one question since my download 48 hours ago, which is: When I try to open a saved file from Micro Brush 2 in Source SDK it gets to 5% of "Reading Chunks" and locks up. Can somehow help me out? I've already made some pretty exciting brushes but now I want to put them into my latest CS:S level.

:smt006 Keep up the awesome work and I'll try to support your projects on GPC as much as possible. Already have half the interface figured out and will have some tutorials up for your software as soon as I get a little bit more practice.

Thanks,
Abe

Oh hai!
It contains the newest release at the top: http://shrinker.beyond-veils.de/project ... sh2/MB2DL/
You can E-Mail me the map or a download link to it and I'll look into it and make it work.
see http://shrinker.beyond-veils.de/contact/
You can look straight down and press "L", that at least aligns the camera nicely... for now.
I already experimented with "interpreting" PNG files created in paint as maps and actually got quite far with it before my own language put too many constraints on me. I had defined multiple layers as rectangles of the same size in the PNG, had a color code at the top left, and in my converter described what each color meant. This enabled the user to use very expressive 2D maps, while the converter only took into account certain colors. You know, coding a box of 4 pixels with 2 colors already enables you to orient enemies... was fun. But my system that I used for that is dead now, it couldn't handle the complexity. And I got tired of having to aim so much with my mouse to draw levels. Maybe my new language will be capable of that sometime. Maybe I could make a little sketching tool sometime. There is a lot of room for interpretation when you convert 2D graphics/blueprints to maps. My converter automagically recognized the map size, could make sense of texture information, and all that stuff.

Looking forward to tutorials, keep me updated, and thanks for the positive attention :)

On a little side note, the official name is "Microbrush 2", please respect the casing and spelling :)

Oh, yeah Steam is still necessary. I thought you meant that you couldn't use the SKD in offline mode.

Hey there everybody,

I'd like to announce that I have started creating video tutorials for Microbrush 2. I'm currently using the 2.1 version (latest) released by Shrinker so that should be fun =]

I'd like to cover as much as I can, explaining different features etc.. If you've got any questions, ask in the comments of the youtube video.

Thanks!

Yes you do, trying to open source sdk without the internet has it frozen on "updating" window, even if the program is up to date.

I was able to run it offline for a month or so without internet just fine.

Even on my laptop it works.

He meant the steam update, which after that gives some crap about no login info stored on the computer

Last time I tried working on Packbsp in-between steam update steps, I found the clientregistry.blob file has been "cleaned" of certain types of cached data. It's just how they do the "restart to upgrade steam" stuff, I bet. Don't restart unless you're about to bring it back up again in an online mode.
