Actually, do NOT use usb thumb drives, those things die quickly if used a lot for backing up files of a large filesize.

I've got a 4 year old 256 meg flash drive who's removal from computer process consists of me putting files on it then yanking it out of the USB drive the second the transfer is done. Never lost a single file, nothing has ever corrupted. It really just depends on the quality of the product you buy.

I treat hardware like it owes me money, yet very rarely have any problems.
It's quite simple really. I want to be a professional level designer. I want this to be my job.

Idk, I can't trust them. My brothers friend had one and they kept all of their works on it, and one day it ceased to work and they lost a good 4 years of all their digital works they made in college and a very large portfolio.

I guess it depends on the brand, but tbh hardware DOES die out, especially if you use it frequently. Your best option is to buy an external hard-drive that you don't leave on or burn copies onto DVDs / discs and keep them in a well organized CD booklet.

I like to keep a flash drive with my content along with a copy on two different computers. If I really care about something I'll also host it. :D

Actually, I've washed my 4 gb Geek Squad flash drive twice and it works flawlessly. It's not particularly old but I mean...it was submerged in soapy-ass water for about 15 minutes while being violently tossed around , twice, and it still works perfectly. I am amazed.

Well that was just idiotic. Nothing's completely guarenteed not to fail, much less something that can be lost so easily. He should have kept copies of his file on a hard-drive or another USB stick in case.

rofl, popcornjake's observation.

Here's a few images of my abandoned 99 Bolts maps for the viewing pleasure. I know I've posted this before but this is the dead maps thread so I had to give these things a proper grave.

I have learned SOOO much about mapping since six months ago, it was just not worth keeping these maps. Somewhere around Planet Phillip, you can download the maps and play them. Woot :)
