Aden Castle WIP

Postby TorQueMoD on Wed Nov 18, 2009 12:58 am

Hey all!

I've recently started mapping in 3D Studio max so I thought I'd post some of my recent work up here to get some feedback.

I found this gorgeous piece of concept art from Lineage 2 http://www.freakygaming.com/gallery/game_art/lineage_2/aden.jpg And thought it would be fun to model this beautiful castle.

Here are some renders of my progress so far:

Poly Count so far is 14,223 tris.

Still lots of work left but let me know what you think so far.

Looking good so far. The real hard work is going to be normal mapping this baby. Do you have z-brush?

Yeah.... not so good with the normal mapping yet. I just use CrazyBump on the diffuse maps when I've finished the textures. I know, not the best, but its better than none.

No one else is going to give me their opinion on the map?

No, no. This isn't for Source. Its just for my portfolio. I've decided to branch away from Source for a while due to its ever apparent limitations and this is my first map outside of Hammer.

Then what are you making this for? UT3 engine?

Either way tbh there isn't much of a map there yet to give opinion about (actually, no map at all as it is just a model for now), but the model itself so far looks ok.
Perhaps it would have been easier to make multiple smaller parts and then combine them together to form the whole castle. But I am a noob modeler so can't really give a proper comment/advice there :)

Anyway, good luck with it

I'm just going to make this into a static scene. Its not really a level. I just saw the concept art and thought it looked sexy as hell and would be fun to try to re-create. I might do a fly-through once everything else is finished.

I guess I could throw it into the Unreal engine later, but my intention was never to make it into a functioning level. Its just nice architecture and I thought the guys at Interlopers here would have an appreciation for it.

Still loads of work left to do including texturing of course, but I'm also teaching myself how to model characters and organics at the moment so it'll be a while before the next update.
