fw_scifi (First real map)

Postby quuz on Tue Dec 01, 2009 8:33 pm

So this is my first real map, only thing is I suck at texturing and I have absolutly no idea of how to texture it and waht textures to use. I want it to have a space base kinda feeling or something like portal. I tried with some combine textures but it just didn't seem to fit to me. I also tried with these devtextures as Ive seen a fe good example of white/grey dev textures being used to make scifi themed maps, but me I dont know really.

Its a map for the game mode fort wars on darkland servers

As a first map it looks ace. You seem to be trying hard to use interesting shapes and spaces that open in different ways, which is a really good sign. Adding some rooms of some kind, even if they are tucked back into corners, could be a good avenue to look down.

As for textures, don't use dev textures for the final. Haha. Do you know how to use photoshop/GIMP/etc? With a bit of playing you can come up with some pretty reasonable images, especially if you are going to use largely flat-colour/panelled surfaces like you have there.

Good luck! And don't forget the lighting! Play with using different angles (ie. up-lighting, down-lighting, side-on lighting) since the shape and theme of your map is really lending itself to that.

Edit: Whups, unintentional thread necromancy. : (

I have to say that the ceiling does look pretty spiffy. The only thing I can see wrong so far is the repetitive architecture on the walls. Unless that's what you were going for, as there is architecture like that. However, I think if you were to stick with that style, you should try and make it a little more interesting.

I can't say much other than that. Your map looks very early in development since it doesn't have any real texturing in it yet. Get some lighting and textures in there and you might be able to receive more critiquing.

I call bullshit on that!

As for textures, citadel/combine metal is the only futuristic type textures in HL2. (I think)
Might have to get custom ones. Search for "citadel" and "metal", I'm sure you'll find something that fits. :-)
Apart from that though, nice brushwork.

THx for the tips, the map is going to be for a gmod mod called fort wars, a kind of dm based game mode so thats why it lacks rooms and has much open space (because in the game mode you need to build a fort :P)

Yea about lightning, I've been experimenting with spotlights and sprite to get some good lightning at different angels.

About it being repetitive so yea that pretty much what I was going for, a symmetrical 2 team map.

Im not bs:ing you the thing I did earlier was like two blocky towers made with 2 brushes and 1 brush in the middle as bridge pretty much xD

I tried messing around with the combine textures but meh, I found some really nice textures in teh dystopia mod how ever which I might use :3

If there any specific textures you might need, I could always help out with some. I'm a bit busy myself with doing other, but textures are not something that takes more than maybe 10 minutes to do, particularly sci-fi.

It does look good, I like the roofing its got a sort of feel to it, not simplistic and such. Layout looks very neat too.
Looking for Low-poly weapon modeller for a non-source mod, if you believe your awesome, message me!

I'm glad you are taking our words onboard! Be sure to post some screens when it progresses a bit further. Oh, about using textures from a mod, make sure to email the creators and ask very nicely for permission. Using other people's stuff without asking can make you very unpopular, very quickly. : )
