First Map

Postby Gotta on Sat Dec 19, 2009 2:27 am

This is the first map I've ever created. It doesn't really have a purpose, just a test to see how I am doing. I wouldn't mind some feedback for improvement on future maps, etc :smt023 . Thank you!

well you could use more decals, and the window in pic one looks a little too big for a small room, maybe raise the roof? or replace it with smaller rectangle windows and rafters?

One thing I must say about developing for the Source Engine is that it takes a lot of technical knowledge before one can make what they envision. Keep at mapping. Don't give it up if it's what you want. You'll get better with time. I guarantee it. This map looks like a portal to understanding technical knowledge. You have walls, textures, lighting, and mid-range complex entities. I will not take a stroll through it, but I can say it looks like a decent first map. When you design a map, keep in mind why you're making it. Do you want other people to enjoy it? Work at making maps fun, functional, and efficient. For future reference to any new comers, don't make a thread and available download for your first map here at Interlopers. It will all end in tears. If you want quick feedback just post some screenshots in the map pimpage thread.

A portal to understanding knowledge is great description of what I've what I'm trying to do. Thanks for the advice Mr Chop and I'm afraid now it probably wasn't such a good idea to let my excitement get the better of me (I only discovered Hammer a few days ago) and post a new thread. =(

Don't feel bad, we were all new once. Just disregard any flaming the rest of the community might have in store for you. *looks at certain members* At least you were humble. Some people act like their first map is to the standard of professionals, which gets very annoying to be honest.

Wow, I think those displacements looks good!

One thing to keep in my mind when mapping, you really need to make sure everything makes sense, why is this wall here? Why is this window here? Why is there a secret chamber with a bed in it leading out to a random cave?
