It's early days for this map, I only started it today. But I have to brag about the soundscape I've written for it, I'm very impressed with it. Intense city fighting sounds with thunder crackling in the background. Even quite a few custom gunfight sounds. I'm working on a lite version which should be finished by tomorrow. I just have an interior to do, then It's on to making it look like it's in a city, not just floating in the sky.
If you ever played Rainbow Six Rouge Spear, I'm going for a similar atmosphere as the map with the hostages in the church (I forget what it's called).

I'll try but I've never really gotten the hang of making them "less like square blocks". I usually make my builings more square. It makes them easier to edit the interiors.

I haven't seen any other maps from spas but that one does indeed look good.

It's not so much that you have to make the buildings some shape other than square, just try to add little detail pieces to them to make them more flashy... func_detail is your friend.

Just little things like borders that jut out around the area between the first and second floor or something like that. Decorative pieces of design that dont really have to be functional for anything.
