cs:s NYC STYLE Subway

Postby Modifier on Sat Jan 30, 2010 1:54 am

Hi there. Im new to Interlopers, although I have been coming onto the site for a while. So today I figured what the heck I will join :)

I have been mapping for just over a year and am one of the developers for the HL2 Prison Island mod :)

Map info:
A counter strike:source gg map. (gg map because I wanted to make a quick map to refine my skills)
Setting: A new york style subway station
Style: Realistic
Size: Small

I have worked on this map for about 5 days now

Anyway, I need your help/suggestions on what will make this map look more detailed. People have siad to me that it looks detailed enough, But I feel something is missing.

Any help is appreciated.

Heres are some pics :)

Looks good. The lighting could be a little bit more orange like the subway in Max Payne.

Image

And the orange stairs in the top right of the top down look too steep. In the 5th shot you need to fix the yellow posters and the atlantic decals. In the second shot the darker tiles don't fit the normal tiles on the floor. Un-detailed in most places try adding some trash and bottles and newspapers and stuff like that. Doors look to big and they need a frame. Try looking at the dev texture for what the standard door sizes are. Alot of texture alignment problems. Particularly the floor in shot 9. Use overlays so you can rotate the decals to be less repetitive. Some places the ceiling looks just a little bit too low. Again look for the standard wall size dev texture. Other than that this is looking pretty good. Layout looks great aswell.

Also. Welcome to the community! :smt039

@RA7
Thanks
And yeah,it does look a bit like max payne dont it :)

@Armageddon
Thanks for your adice.

Frames deffinatly need adding thanks for that.

Floor textures will be alligned then time I open up hammer.

Surprisingly enough I used the dev textures for both the doors and the walls. I even raised the walls from 128 to 148. Maybe its screenshot angle? Maybe the some of the walls need raising to 158. Will deffinatly need to check that out. thanks for spotting that.

Also yes! I new it was the floor that was un-detailed, deffiantly needs some more trash to make it more beleivable and more detailed.

Thanks for post and the welcome to the interlopers commuity! :D

Personally, I would never mix HL2 assets with CS:S, but other than that, looks pretty good, keep it up :)!

Add some trims and more grungy texture on the ceiling, makes it look more interesting. Also, add some color to those lights, they look damn flat. If you just can, remove those C17 trains, they look crap and don't fit at all. Make subways out of brushes (use the HL2 train as reference, the one in the beginning of HL2) and use the train textures, you know what I mean. The fourth shot stairs look bit too steep, fatties will be barrel rolling all the way from up to platform level.

Max Payne has great subway for reference. :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I changed the lighting a little, but it still needs tweaking especially in one room where its kinda orange.

Erm, I also changed the ceiling textures for the subway. And I added some minor details like trash,garbage, empty bottles ect. I still dont know if its enough trash and details on the floor though. I dont want to obstruct movement but I want things on the ground to break up the long subway tunnel which is something like 2200 units long.

I recorded me walking round the map, so heres the link. Should give you a bit more infomation than pictures

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqWc0jeGock

I still need to add door frames, However I did align the black tiles on the subway. which where previously un-aligned.

Tell me what you think of the vid :)

cheers

That lighting is SO much better! I still think you need just abit more trash and some grunge textures on the walls. Spread out some prop_physics trash around there too.

This map is pretty promising looking, however I really think you could go with adding custom textures to make the map feel a little bit less half life 2 - ish. I also feel the wall texture you are using for the subway now is a bit too grungy. I mean, New York does have some shitty subway stations, but I think a texture that uses smaller tiles and a little bit cleaner / reflective would give the map some really promising visuals. =)

If I have some time, I could try to help you out by giving you some textures for non-hl2 posters / textures, but I'm not really the BEST at that. I'm sure there's others on lopers who are qualified to do that aswell. :[]:

@Yokai

Thanks :)

I would of gone with some custom textures, but im really not good at making them :/ But I understand what you mean, it does have that typical "half life 2" source look.

hmm, im not to sure about the grungy-ness of the wall texture, I guess it does look a bit much, but its the only one texture that I saw that had a reasonble balance from not to clean or dirty. Damn, I wish I could make textures sometimes.. *2nd 2010 resolution. Learn photoshop :D*

But I could mix it up with some cleaner tile textures for sure, I just wonder how the lighting will react to it :)

If you have time for the non halfife 2 textures/posters That would be great and of course when released credits will be due for the textures :) But if your not the best no worrys :)

Anyway. Heres a quick update. I looked at the max payne pics on the internet for the subway level, And I saw one image and I just had a spark in my head!

I saw that the devs made made typical 90 degree angle walls, you know the blocky sort. And they mixed it up with some curved walls so I thought what the heck! thats great, I will add some curves to make it more interesting but still on the realism side.

Also, I added a couple new areas, only small but I made these to break up the long subway tunnel. They seem to work wonders. Go max payne for the inspiration! XD

and thanks for bringing max payne up, that game is of course set in new york with a newy york subway soo all is good refference wise :)

heres the pics

I feel the scale is wrong, and the signs are too big.

On the other hand, I have never been to a NY subway.

nice work. the roof could probably do with some more interesting geometry and details. it's an often neglected area within interiors.

pipes and a vent-system will bring a lot of detail into you map.
