Hi, I am kind of new to the forums (having asked a few questions before) and now I am getting into actually mapping with focus so that I may actually be able to release something.I have been working about 4 days on this map which is based slightly on the combine factories.

PART 1 the player needs to get to the gun store to unlock the door to the next part.'

1. An atmospheric start in some kind of warehouse where the player gets the hev suit a 357 magnum, crowbar, and some ammo.

1.1. The player exits the warehouse to discover absolute combine devastation of the surrounding industrial/city area. He is drawn to two buildings: the cyber cafe and the gun store.

2. A beatifically illuminated horse in a majestic fountain.

3. The brightly lit cyber cafe draws the eye and has great cover and ammo.

4.An interesting building with a few snipers and a little fenced off garbage area.

5 The gun store has tons of ammo and a button to unlock a door which leads to part 2.

6. a small shed with a metal door unlocked by the button in the gun store.

PART 2 player progresses towards factory

7. A small building the player crosses through and gets a shotgun from. off to the side there are 3 combine on two balconies and 1 in a foxhole.

8. A factory with incinerator at end. Just before the factory (between 7 and 8) you kill 4 combine with your new found shotty.

9. WIPer part of the map, supposed to be a puzzle where the player advances along the conveyer belt while dogeing killing blows from machinery (cheesy action sequence).

Questions


I have been workin on the last part, what I have are two tanktrains running along tracks, (see last pic in number 9) I want them to hurt the player but it is not working; they just push the player along, I was thinkking of just parenting two hurt brushes to the side of them would this work?

Any ideas about how to make it look better, as I said I am very new and all I have is a slight fog and a good dark environment light. I am aiming for a dark and sick feel with bright white lights hinting the player along, help?

I also need ideas for more things along the conveyor belt as it will be a significant part of the map.

Trains should hurt the player if blocked. I think there's a setting that you need to set as active something like hurt if blocked, it's either under the smart edit or flags I can't remember which.

I won't bother critiquing your blocky-as-fuck mapping, because you're obviously a newbie to Source. So carry on and develop yourself for the time being.

My big issue is your lighting. It's far, far, far too dark in some places. Hideously so. "1" is the biggest issue; it needs illumination. Atmosphere is all about effective lighting, not a total lack of. So stick some other light sources in there for the time being.

My other gripe is your bad no-drawing. At "5", why the hell is there a 2D square? That's a nodrawn brush. Sort it out, it looks horrific.

Otherwise, refine, smarten it up and light it better. Try to study buildings in games and in real life and make your surrounding area more interesting. Effective use of textures is key. You've got the gameplay mechanics nailed, you just need the aesthetics.
