Looking for something to add to your L4D2 map?

Postby thenone on Fri May 14, 2010 2:33 am

I've been working on a cathedral/church in the last while, and was looking for someone who would want to add it to their project, hopefully someone who is experienced so they can implement it properly. It's for L4D2, has a few new ideas in it, custom props and textures(from scratch). It would best be added to a city scene, and as an ending to a chapter of a campaign(finale).

Still some work to do on optimizing and lighting, but the basics is there. Probably need another month realistically, don't have the time/energy to complete a whole map(perfectionist), so maybe someone would want to add this to theirs?

Here's a look:

Better Quality Now... and better lighting.

It large, empty and boring. Needs more everything. Lighting needs a lot of work. Design could use some changes, but overall a nice start.

Are you suggesting I prefab that?

Anyway, lighting is fucking terrible.
It is empty.
No strategic points for survivors in case of mass horde.

So basically, you threw some brushes together in an archaic manner, called it a cathedral, said "Fuck it, I'm not even gunna try." when lighting was needed, and released it here just in case someone was interested in your creation.

Nope.

And welcome to interlopers.
It's safer here.

RAWR!!

Haha, anyways, those are called "models", and yes, some "brushes", and it's called "reading", like "basics" and "Still some work to do"...

Have you modeled anything? It takes time and effort, not like chopping up some brushes, or moving some displacements around. It's especially not reskinning BS.

If you can't see a model for a model, you're useless.

You don't intimidate me GUY.

I'm not your guy, PAL.

And no I have not modeled anything, as I am still learning to do so.
Intimidation isn't what I was going for, just flaming the new guy.

So anyway, fullbright/decent lighting please. I want to actually see what this thing looks like.

*Edit*
If you can't see a model for a model, you're useless.

I can't really see anything...

Watch your attitude. Pwnd is a critic; he may seem harsh but that's simply how he works.

Do bear in mind asking something like "have you modelled anything" will bite you in the arse on this site.

Stay chilled bro and accept the criticism maturely; which you have, making relevant fixes. Just stay professional in your posts as you are in attitude.

""Fuck it, I'm not even gunna try."" That part pissed me off a bit, but yeah, thanks for the advice.

The video is a bit dark, but it's a L4d map/part, set at night... supposed to be. The new lighting shows alot more, maybe turn up your monitor a bit, I can see. Was just wondering if someone would want to implement it into their WIP, save them some time, don't even have to credit me, this is just a hobbie really..

I'm not your pal, FRIEND. (that's funny u got that!)

How bout you disable lighting since its so fucking shitty anyways? I really can't see whats a model and whats not because its too dark, other then the statue and maybe a window or two. And as a word of advice, you will lose any any respect from this community if you act like a childish prick when being criticized constructively. How are you to learn when biting the hand that trains you.

Was this a serious post? You tell him he'll lose respect for acting like a prick for being criticized constructively right after you say "How bout you disable lighting since its so fucking shitty anyways?" I'm starting to see why other communities see this site as a bunch of elitist dicks.

I didn't intend that to be as offensive as it was, but I guess it came off as harsh. Can't really subtract things I say so I guess its to late to do anything about it. Lets just try to end any further flaming or disruption we caused from the thread and continue on.

Looks rather large. You might wanna consider making it smaller but as a result your prop density will be higher which will get rid of the "bland and empty" vibe.

The lighting may suit the in-game experience, but for showing stuff I'd suggest you light the area up, or perhaps post the in-Hammer screenshot of what it looks like. It's kinda hard to say something when you can't really see anything.

The lighting form the chandelier seems rather unfitting. It's cool white, but if it's a candle chandelier (looks to me like one) the light would be more yellow/orange.

Churches can deliver really creepy light play with the pillars casting long shadows, you could put projector lights that were brought in by other survivors, stuff like that.

What I did like were the window panes (forgot their name) and the window frames. Those were well done. The arches that run parallel to the long carpet thing look alright too, but the lighting on them fails since I take it they are props. Are you running with -staticproppolys -textureshadows -staticproplighting?

Hey, yeah vcool, I dunno about those parameters, and I don't know where you guys find all this info!?

But I suppose those are for the run commands when compiling, I guess your saying they would help?

As for the emptiness, I think it's rather easy to add valves props in, and I'd do that later.. but I know it's empty, plus I haven't made any normals for most of the textures, other than the stained-glass windows(refraction).

Thanks

He responded to my flame in a mature (Though sarcastic) manner in which was suitable for the insults I threw at his work.

Flames aside, more WIPs. We love WIPs. WIPs with fullbright or at least random lighting in the horridly dark areas just so we can see them, even if they won't be lit in the final product.

I don't think anyone in this community (Maybe a few...) could do this without moral implications. Simply taking your work and claiming it as their own isn't something people in this community would do, even if you told them it was okay if they didn't mention you.
