DM-Permanent - Need help optimizing my first map

Postby markishome359 on Mon Oct 11, 2010 1:41 am

Hey guys!

This is my first time posting here, and this is my first serious attempt at a level. To get myself familiar with Hammer, I started with something really basic: It's an eyeballed copy of DM-Permanent][ for the original Unreal Tournament. Everything's gone really well, and it's basically done (except for the lighting), but I'm having a really hard time figuring out how to optimize it.

It's all BSP except for the light meshes, physics objects, and the shield emitter on the roof, so things should be pretty simple. Unfortunately, the framerate will still drop in half around a lot of the map, and I can't figure out for the life of me why.

I've included both the .bsp and the .vmf (and associated files) so you can run it in-game and check it out in the editor. (You'll find a lot of hint brushes that indicate I have no idea what I'm doing; sorry about those.) If you guys could help me out with this, I'd really appreciate it. I've read some tutorials on how to use hint brushes and think about vis leafs, and I kind of get it, but I'm not sure how to put it into practice or figure out if I'm doing it "right".

Thank you so much for taking the time to help a newbie!

- Mark
