Ew, brown base is brown, needs more golden engravings.

made a start on some books. Each model variation will have 1-3 texture variations, and a further amount of colour variations which will be done via material instance's in UDK. This should end up with around 10 usable variations per model. They're gonna be used mostly on the bookcases.

That's quite high poly for something will be duplicated hundreds of times.

In regards to the pillar, I think the bottom of the middle section needs just one more ring along the bottom. Have you thought about using gold to some of the edges to really push the colours?

Yeah I'm gonna do some gold trim-style engravings on the pillars when I get around to it. I made some further progress on the books today, theyre basically on a 256 texture each.

quick test of ze books, just wanted to see what they looked like in scale. At the moment theres 4 different models with only 1 texture for each (all on a 512x512) I'm gonna make another texture variation for each one (so 2x textures for each model) put alongside the current on same texture sheet (expand 512x512 to 1024x512). Then what I'm going to do is arrange the books on the bookcase in max before we go into UDK. The colour variations for the books are going to be done via vertex colours set in max I think (then used to multiply colour over the diffuse in UDK material).

The amount of books there = 2k polys, so each 3-section bookcase is gonna be around 6k. The taller ones probably will be 9-11k but I think that's a doable amount considering they're a huge part of the scene and the texture footprint is pretty low.

Low-res texture is low-res.

Evenly spaced books is even.

Heard it before blah blah blah...

5500 with backfaces on the books deleted, pretty happy with that. Just need to work out how to do vertex colours in max now and then import to UDK and get raped by the material

top notch optimization for the detail you've achieved!

5500 tri's for each 3-column bookcase (books and wooden frame).
1024x512 diffuse/spec/normal for the wood (tiling, gonna be reused elsewhere)
1024x512 diffuse/spec/normal for all of the books (8x unique textures, covers coloured via vertex colour)

That's nice work marks. You've done a lot with the texture space there. Impressed with how the books look in UDK.You could use a tiling mix map to add variation on the wood. Does it have a detail normal yet?

Depending on your end goal you might consider further breaking up the bookshelves with circular objects.
They often do this in the real world with rooms that have bookcases, round and circular objects tend to attract the eye and it helps with the rectangular nature of book cases.

This would go well with a personal study type feel, but you might be going more for a public(or among a group) style which would feature less personalization and more books.

Some Examples:

But I'm just throwing out ideas, watching the process unfold is quite nice.

IT'S SO SEXY!!!!!! :jingle:

I'd make the sand transition to the bookcases better. Also, I never would have thought of coloring them. :|
