Overcast B2

Postby jgoodroad on Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:01 am

I have entered a map in for PlanetPhillip's Rooftopville mapping competition, and I would like your comments, as I plan on updating and releasing an extended version of the map.

http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/roof ... ife-2-ep2/

from the comments left, it seems my biggest problem is navigation, people are getting lost in my map, So I wanted to ask if someone could make a video of their first playthrough. So I can see what players are doing. The more videos the better, but your comments and CC are just as usefull.

Many Thanks.

I. Fucking. Hate. Manhacks.
Other than that I didn't get too lost, I was still able to beat it.
Highlight to read:
The zombie room scared me though, it's a good thing

Really? cause I find that manhack encounter the "funnest"... but I guess I share a minority view... tell me, how did you "fight" the manhacks? I only know of three "main" ways (so far) of defeating them without taking a hit.

and, how do you feel about "fast headcrab swarms"?

I ran back down the staircase to funnel them so I could light them up with my smg

I would find you and hit you repeatedly with a hammer like so --> :smt021

I'll make a playthrough video for you on my first run, and add some additional notes if necessary.

Edit: Okay, I just finished recording it. I'll upload it tomorrow.

ok good, you did one of the 3 predicted ways. You never know when a player is going to do something you don't predict...

Balls, the game stops recording demos when you die.

Highlight to read:
But yeah, died once to the manhacks, beat them once ending with 5hp and no ammo, and once by killing all of them with a grenade when they pop out.

The only part I really got stuck were realizing the first locked door had a wooden plank barring it, and realizing I had to build a staircase of boxes after the first hunter. Generally stuff that somebody more intelligent than I would notice :p

The barred door could use a light or something to make it a bit more obvious, the only reason I really noticed it was I was shining around the room with the flashlight

Godamn though, parts of that were effing hard. Not in terms if finding my way around, but dying. Shotguns be painful on hard mode.

I gave it a go. Got very lost. Got very frustrated. Maybe it'll be helpful to you... It will probably be pretty painful to watch for anyone else. I was playing on normal, and getting wrecked. Wasn't really happy with this =/

Part 1

And part 2 (yes, part TWO!)

Alright, Vegas seems to be having a hard time importing my recorded files. I'll get it eventually, but in the time that I'm working on it, here's a short review:
-SPOILERS-

The map was okay. The combat was probably the best part of the map, although once I neared the long bridge connecting the two buildings, I felt a little overwhelmed with all the enemies you just threw at me. The zombie ambush made me jump.

I can understand why everyone was getting lost. There's no real sense of direction. Fortunately I was able to get through the entire map, but at one part (the part where you press the computer key), I had no idea I was supposed to do anything with the computer. I ended up jumping to another roof thinking it was continuing, and then I found myself back at the beginning of the entire map. I speed ran through the entire thing again since there were no enemies, and luckily found the keyboard was usable. Then I had no idea what to do with the headcrab canister. I eventually found out it opened the window, but there was no clear indication of that (make it break something that will then spark, that will help). Other than that, I was fine.

The map felt very dead and scripted. The goal of a map is to make the world around you feel alive. When I got the crossbow at the beginning, the door next to me opened automatically. That gives me the clear feeling of being scripted.

About the visuals, they were quite bland and boring. I'm not sure if this is due to your skill level, or time limitations. The details just consisted of the essential things the room needs, and other than that they were pretty much empty. The lighting was dull, and there were these weird color splotches in dark spots.

I will edit my post with the video when I finally get it up.

Edit: You know what, I'll just give you the demo. Vegas doesn't like rendering videos over 10 minutes, because then it crashes.

A few gameplay points I realized after watching OhSnap's video:
Highlight to read:
Hunter battles aren't fun when you're fighting them out of a single choke point. They are however very fun to wrestle with in a somewhat-open area, like the rooftop you seemingly closed off. If you had have taken the combine off the roof behind you, it would have made that area a lot more fun. Even after the hunter died, that AR2 combine was a bastard.

Also, a bit of health in the room the hunter came out of would have been nice. Certainly would have made the manhacks less annoying to kill (though they were still fun to me :p)

Just got the demo to work! (turns out I placed it in the wrong directory) and let me say it was very informative... and surprising fun to watch. You expressed a lot of emotion while playing... the only painfull parts are the parts I need to fix, and it gave me a few ideas, most notable was when you tried (twice) to hop onto an inaccessable rooftop... I will be changing that. You also showed a distaste for a few certain bits that I will be modifying.

oh, and let me ask you... since you finished the map I wanted to ask you a few questions

What was your favorite part?
What was your least favorite part?
and "memorable" sections?
any part that made you think, and/or make you feel "satisfied" when you played it?
any other note-worthy observations/glitches/thoughts?
