to the brushes like the one the player's looking at in the last screenshot you posted, smoothing groups can be applied. the lighting will be rendered with a, surprise, more smooth transition. to do this, use the texture tool, select the faces and apply a smoothing group (the button on the lower right of the face edit sheet). I'm sure someone else can tell you about the exact meaning of the numbers, or you can just experiment with them (I never really worked with them).
