Hello to all you elite mappers and everyone!

I just started mapping again today so instead of trying to fix one of my hopelessly large never-to-be-compiled maps, I decided to try something relatively easier and take something new from my vast library of reference material.

So just started this today and I guess I've spent probably around four hours on it. Had to scrap all the displacement terrain because it was causing an error on compile. This compiled in right around twenty minutes.

Be gentle and keep in mind I am an extremely nuub mapper who has never finished a map. :lol:

You did a good brushwork but I doubt that´s the best reference location to start a map. How are you going to work your boundaries considering that picture seems to be of a planar terrain that doesnt even have big trees in miles. For my experience prairies are the worst scenarios to map as you never find a good way to cut the line of sight. Source is better for forrests, lakes and mountains.

Also, find a better water and concrete material for that drain.

The prairie it is a pickle no doubt about it. I kindof like the idea of just keeping it true to the reference with a 3d box extending player view. Was thinking maybe try cheezing it with some hedges in the back, a fence on the west side and then possibly some hilly cliff terrain on the East but it's just too much damn trouble trying to seal up all that space. Will probably just go with prairie and an invisible player clip. Possibly just a sloped hill and then interdispursed shrubbery and trees. It's already going to have too many foliage props as it is without worring about using more to block in player.

If you can take a little creative leeway with it heres what I would do:

1. Make a wall or buildings around the Silo, so make it into a "compound"

2. Make the whole environment a little grayer with a thunderstormy kind of skybox

3. Add lots more trees

4. Add more decay and grunge, get the whole scene to have an ambiance or mood to it :)

The original image seems to have loads of dead trees and bushes, also a fence covering the area

You can get a 3d skybox working there

Looks good, but I'm confused as to what those things are? Are they corn silos or missile silos?

Silo probably isn't the correct word. They look like unfinished cooling towers for a nuclear reactor.

I have to say this is a nice original location... Definitely needs moar to the structure like mentioned a building of some sorts... Would be a great into to the location walking up too it from a distance...

They need water pools inside.
Also add some pipes and bushes.


Also that place is Chernobyl.
