I'm making a mindf**k level

Postby DillonBarba on Wed Jun 22, 2011 10:27 pm

I need some help with a few things, i tried using point_clientcommand and a trigger_proximity in my map but when i try to compile vbsp.exe fails and then when i try to reopen the map hammer crashes at 5% everytime.

heres what i made last night to see if my effect would work.
also, is there anyway to disable the mouse look? i was thinking about setting up a camera trigger but i dont know how to do that.

Ha ha, nice one. I don't know about disabling mouselook, but I thought the effect there was neat. Perhaps keep it and have the player continue by looking behind them and seeing something.

thanks man, i was gonna have the consolecommand entity open the players cd tray and while they tripping out on their cd drive opening ill have a face flash on the screen so they will see it in the corner of their eye. (hopefully)

how do i make a texture take no light, as in make the texture appear fullbright.

Haha, that's funny. Honestly though, if you were to lock the mouse on that part, I'd end up trying to alt-tab out of it and possibly ending the hl2.exe process. :P

I wouldn't be fooled. I use XP so I don't have those window styles.

I also have XP and my error windows are just like that one.

Honestly, unless you put a funny line in that error message (like "this game is haunted and your computer too")* it crosses the line of gallows humor.

*Not implying that that was funny, it was just an example.

I enjoy this, though I do like the idea of something being behind the error window more than just the window itself.
Take out the flickering light, though; every single time I see one, my first thought is, "something's gonna happen here."

nobody will expect an event like this when passing by the flickering light. Unless they have seen this video.

On that note, you should simply stop posting here because you are destroying the magic.

I have long dreamed of making a scenario like this. The glitches should be much more subtle at first, enough to make the player think the design of the level is poor or slightly bugged. An NPC saying the same line in the exact same tone twice or three times in a row...or a sound delay (the player hears footsteps go by him first, then a rebel silently runs by after that (or vice versa)). Experiment with simulating frame rate drops, sound stutters, poor or impossible NPC performance (standing in the blank-slate arms-raised pose, then suddenly appearing to wake up and then looking at the player saying, "woah, i think i just blacked out") ... and of course, breaking the 4th wall (the ghost in the machine talking directly to the player via error messages, whispers, hidden textures, game_text, etc).

It would be a whole lot more mindfuckier if it were completely unexpected, though.
