Capsa- A Small Experiment in Source

Postby Kanine01 on Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:10 pm

So I've been interested in a FacePunch thread involving shipping crate architecture and I thought that this would translate well into a source map.

I also made this map as a way that I might improve on my lighting techniques in Source and generally just get better at making maps look "good."

I still have yet to do any sort of real detail or any sort of exterior setting, I'm planning on adding that soon.

I still need to improve the lighting quite a bit along with much more. I'll be glad to receive any constructive criticism that you may have!

Looks nice, I really like the windows. But I got 2 problems:

1: The paintings on the walls aren't receiving the light properly, try putting 'info_lightings' at the windows (or what ever the light source maybe) give them names and set the paintings 'Lighting Origin' parameter to the 'info_lightings' names.
2: That open area (closest to the bottom left corner of the first image) should have a pool, just sayin'.

I agree the lighting on those pictures probably isn't doing them justice.

And are you making these textures yourself?

Anyways, its looking good. (and a cool concept to begin with)

Aside from the window textures, this is all vanilla CSS.

Ah k, thanks. Didn't recognise some models. Could be a sick 1v1 map.

Oh yeah I've heard about those shipping container houses before. Looks really solid so far. I think some custom textures would do some great justice here though.

Sorry if the update's been a bit late; I've been pretty swamped with schoolwork lately and I haven't had much free time.

I'm liking the roof garden, is there any way to get there from the second level rather than just that ladder?

Working on a good way to connect the garden to the second level atm.

Here's a quick and dirty update to show I installed a door on the second floor garden. I also added some window variation based on the crits from a few viewers.

This is one thing that remains a pain in the Source Engine. Pre-compiled lighting has never suited modern mods with any "ease of use". Although the paintings are not brightly illuminated, I think it would be some what unrealistic if they were to be much brighter then the surrounding walls to be honest.

But taking the map at an art perspective, it does look nice. So nice job Kanine.

I decided to add a cozy little loft with a work-space in it. Just for shits and giggles.
