[Help] Quick texture issue

Postby D3aGL3.Uk on Fri Jul 13, 2012 12:38 am

Hey guys, how are you all doing tonight?

Sorry for making a new thread about this (and I hope its in the right location) but I needed some help for Hammer using custom textures.

Basically I was making a map and I added custom textures etc, I took a break for a bit. I decided to get the map open again and take a look and mess about. I have all of my textures saved, so I dragged them into the Materials folder as normal, but something weird is happening.
The textures are in game, but all of the custom ones display white in the 3D viewer and show as a black square with "No Image" in the texture browser.
Basically the textures are being found, they just aren't being loaded. All of the names are correct, even the folder locations - it just doesn't have the texture.

I wonder if there is any change that occured since I was gone which changed the way the textures are handled, or if I need to do something to get them to work again (as I am on a different format). Maybe I missed some files when backing up? But I saved the entire Materials folder and all of the map folders.

I hope you guys know what this issue is and can lend me some help, that would be great.
Otherwise its time to find some new textures! (fun fun).

Thanks in advance,
D3

My only guess is that you changed the folder´s name where the textures are or moved them into a new subfolder. This way hammer finds the vmt files but these point to a wrong path. Open one of the vmt´s that dont work and check if the "$basetexture" path matches the vmf´s location exactly (counting the $game/materials as root).

Another explanation would be that you´re running hammer for a different game or engine version and that what you say about the textures showing as white boxes in the textures browser is only when the "only used textures" box is ticked.

If you happen to have materialsrc or custom sub folders you might want to spam a bunch of different locations just to see where it is loading from. That is what I did, when I was trying to find the right location. This is also assuming your vmts have correct paths like Gambini mentioned.

Best of luck to ya, hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the help guys :) I actually took another look at the specific textures that were missing and for some reason some textures were not backed up. Its strange though because all of the textures that didn't get backed up were the ones I was using in the map.

I guess I have to start finding some new textures (Or finding the old ones again). At least the names have been saved so I can probably re-download the textures again, I just don't understand why they wouldn't be there to start with.

Anyway, thanks a lot for coming in and helping out :).
Have a good day!

EDIT: This is really strange, I am completely stumped while it would do this.

Realworldtextures folder is there - I didn't use any texture from this folder in my map
Realworldtextures2 folder is missing - I used only ONE texture from that folder.

Its like everywhere I have used a texture is missing. Does Pakrat (or however it was called) move textures when you are baking them into the file? Maybe I missed the important ones because I was baking them into the map file?

so confused! :?
