Well I live in south new hampshire, so from my experience we don't get much in the way of big advertising in general.
We'll have standard chains in the bigger shopping areas but outside of that its all small business.
As for signs/posters/flyers and such we actually don't get a whole lot of them, occasional signs maybe at a town hall or community boards but not on buildings or on billboards.(not many billboards here either)
Our newspapers will typically have a few ads from the local businesses, newspapers are often how you know about opening and closings also.
Overall you don't even need to be a creepy cult controlled town to have the same lack of advertising, its more a by word of mouth type of place around here.
