Innsmouth In the Vale

Postby dcw01 on Sat Feb 02, 2013 7:18 pm

I'm trying to map a small section of Innsmouth as created by H P Lovecraft. I'm just wondering though, as they shun (and murder) outsiders and the community as a whole is very tight knit, do you think there would be any advertisement posters/hoardings for local businesses? I mean, I guess the National Grocery Store would have them but would other places?

I recommend you take a look at Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Not only is it an excellent game but it has a well depicted Innsmouth area.

I suppose there would be minor posters and adverts, but there would certainly not be any chains or anything there.

Thanks srredfire. There is a First National store which is a chain but I think that is all. I'll not include anything else though.

I loved Dark Corners. I'm not too sure if it was entirely in keeping with the literary descriptions though. The film Dagon was closer in my opinion. It was full of garrets and sagging gambrel roofs in the story but there was a lot of flat tops in the game. That said I though it was brilliant.

I think they would have a little bit of modest signage. Even though it wouldn't be necessary because all the residents would know all the shops, a shopkeeper tends to have a little bit of pride in his shop and this would involve having a sign out the front. Most likely no posters and advertisements, but at least a sign saying the name of the shop.

Also you'll probably want to have some signs there to assist the player, I think this would be one of those times where being true to the original design would have to take a backseat to the restrictions of the medium.

Well I live in south new hampshire, so from my experience we don't get much in the way of big advertising in general.

We'll have standard chains in the bigger shopping areas but outside of that its all small business.
As for signs/posters/flyers and such we actually don't get a whole lot of them, occasional signs maybe at a town hall or community boards but not on buildings or on billboards.(not many billboards here either)

Our newspapers will typically have a few ads from the local businesses, newspapers are often how you know about opening and closings also.

Overall you don't even need to be a creepy cult controlled town to have the same lack of advertising, its more a by word of mouth type of place around here.
Contact. The EU welcomes the pain free. That's emotional impact.
I actually think limitation is good for creativity. If we had an engine that could do everything, we would be in trouble. It gives us focus. ~~ Randy Lundeen

I am. I haven't touched it for a couple of months but I have nearly finished the mapping on it. It was a hell of a time sink as I wanted to add as much detail as I could. There was no gameplay in it so to speak apart from the odd vent you had to remove. I was trying to get the environment just right first.
