GOLDENEYE FACILITY (SP and DM)

Postby Chubz on Thu Dec 09, 2004 9:19 pm

Yes, you read it right! I am working on a Goldeneye Facililty map for both DM and Single-player, and as of now it is coming along quite nicely. ;)

So here are some OLD screenshots, and some of the new updated ones.

OLD ONES:

NEW UPDATED ONES (Stall doors on the last two):

Now, please keep in mind that I will likely change the textures, and I have already fixed the weird-looking-lighting problem by putting the lights up on the ceiling and inside of a light model, so it looks as if the light is actually being cast by the model.

I'd appreciate any feedback - but please try to go easy on me, as I'm new to this 3d-mapping-stuff.

It looks OK, but those toilets look really small? Or is it just me?

Hehe, I was thinking the same thing man.........I'll try increasing the size of 'em to see what I can do.

Also, the textures are HORRIBLE, I know, but I will fix those here sometime soon!

Thanks for the reply, LOL.

Yeah, dont be worried by the sloppily-placed textures and stuff, those were just placeholders for the architecture.

I will alter them once I finish with everything in the bathroom, and then, onto the other rooms!!! ;)

I'm new to HAMMER and I'm not that experienced with 3d-mapping, so please try not to be so harsh.

Oh, and by the way, it would be almost impossible for a Nintendo 64 game to compete with HL2 visuals.

Anyways, could you guys list some suggestions so that I can make me a list of what to change, what to keep, etc.?

I would really appreciate it! Like telling me to change the size of something, change the texture of something, etc.

:)

Firstly, nic...Wiggle is gay.

Try and select some better textures and tune that lighting, spruce it up a bit. Will look good.

Lol where'd that come from. Also an N64 game can look better than a HL2 map. It's not just about graphics but how well the mapper makes it look.

the scale is totally wrong, try using the orange dev/ textures for the architecture first, they are really helpful for getting average sizes of doors and walls etc.

I'm gonna come out and say a few things.

- You need to look at the comparisson pics you took up there. Notice how the proportions are totally off? You're cublical is about 8 feet long by 4 feet wide; I've seen smaller swimming pools. The main thing that is wrong about your map is the dimensions. It's a big thing in mapping, but don't worry, you'll get the hang of it. Try using the gordon player start model as a 'ruler' with which to measure all the distances against.

- Fair enough, the textures need replacing, someone had a great idea of using the bright orange and grey developer textures before you get some new ones. I would do that. If not, there are plenty of white tile textures from nova prospekt.

- Lighting, I know the N64 Golden eye maps had few sources for their lighting, but you're gonna need some now. In HL2 mapping, if there is a light, it needs to have something to shine from. Place some prop_statics models of flurecent strip lighting in there to bring in a bit of realism.

One last thing, people can be harsh; I can be really harsh, but I only know one thing - when i was new, I never posted anything I knew wasn't up to scratch. I just practiced. Lots of people say "here - my first ever map!". Great, but i'd have waited till atleast my 10th.

Sorry if i sound negative but please stick with mapping, it's the best thing in the world when you get the hang of it, and there's nothing that anyone should say to make you stop!
