[WIP] dm_graveyard

This is my first attempt at mapping, here is the original thread where I first started posting my progress. I started the map about a week and a half ago or so. I'd suggest you guys check it out as it has far more information about the map, It's too late for me to make a full blown post describing everything at the moment :P

There's more screenshots at the original thread, these are the most recent shots of the outside area.

PS: I realize the fog is a bit too much ATM, I just was just testing it in the map so I haven't even tweaked it. It will look better on the final :)

Thoughts, opinions?

Nice work, loving the atmosphere design and architecture. Lighting: not good... way way to dark to be even playable, i suggest putting the ambient up somewhat and then let the fog make it so u cant see to far and stuff, you could leave the amient down like that but put alot more lamps and light around which are prety bright so u can actually see wat ure doing.

i will give you the benefit of the doubt: i know for a fact that ingame screenshots tend to be much darker than they should be, try turning the gamma right up and taking 1/2 more screenies

Yeah the screenshots I posted look much brighter ingame than they do here. The lighting however is still a WIP, I've been placing lights as I go along but the tweaking will come near the end.

Trust me, I don't enjoy shooting people in pitch darkness any more than the next guy, I'll be testing it to make sure that there are SOME places to hide in and ambush people if you wanted to but for the most part I plan to make it just dark enough for it to be moody.

And yeah, I plan to use the fog for that purpose :)

PS: I like the tutorials in this website, they got me started with a few things I didn't bother to try and figure out for myself. I'm surprised nobody's posted any tutorials on texturing effectively so perhaps I may do one when I'm finished? IMHO texturing is very important for a good map.

heh, man im loving that fog, i don't care if it looks dark. I love a map that has a good mood to it, and that fog you got brings it in spades.

I always thought it was "in my humble opinion" - either one works, i guess.

Lovin' the atmosphere....nothing wrong with dark maps - Ravenholm ain't exactly bright! but maybe follow the ravenholm idea a bit more - lots of contrast between quite light/v. dark areas.

I was gonna say it'd force people to take nightvision more seriously...but it's a DM map, i now notice..

so is there an indoor bit? love to see some screenies

I'm looking for 2 or 3 people to playtest the map with me at the moment before I finish all the geometry and get it into "alpha" stages...

I need people who can suggest gameplay changes, geometry placement and general "cool" additions to the map.

Still not sure how I'll send the map files to these people but just PM me and we'll figure something out.

This is NOT a beta test, this is testing of a very unfinished map so keep that in mind. Fun will be had but I'm mostly looking for suggestions and changes that need to be made so I don't have to redo the map later on!

You know that would be nice if we a had a group that would help play test our maps. http://s13.yousendit.com/ Use the site to post the file for temp play. IIRC, it allows 25 downloads or 7 days, which every comes first. That way your beta is not floating around the net in a map pack as easily.

Thanks for the link!

I'll be sure to let you guys know when I get the map uploaded and ready for testing... it should be sometime this week if I can somehow fix Hammer... The latest SDK makes my Hammer crash after 30 mins or so of usage. I've tried everything, deleting the SDK content and redownloading, resetting the config, everything and it still crashes!!

It's seriously putting a dent on my mapping... hope I can somehow fix this soon!

I got the same problem, but saw at VERC that if you close the SDK launcher and Play Games menu it won't happen. Worked for me.

Nice map too.
