MY first map.

My first attempt at making any map. Rather ambitious but looks good and plays well. although there are several tweaks required with the lighting and irregular brushes.

You said in this pic that it was a small security room that was quickly cleared out. Since when was the last time a room was quickly cleared out and the chairs were left in a perfect square around the table?

Ermmmm. I think I was refering to the fact that the staff had cleared out as opposed to all of the equipment being cleared out.

It still looks too fake with the chairs like that. Also the room itself looks really baren.

Ques tumbleweed rolling across scene.

Too barren you say, hmmm I guess it looks better in the flesh so to speak. The picture seems to make the room look bigger. Also adding more props will make navigation of the room a little tricky especially during a gun battle, perhaps?

Moving the chairs wont be a problem if I decide for a less organised look.

Any suggestions spartan to spruce the room up? (no I wont accept a "redo the room" answer).

"Having had no map building skills before now I have had to learn from tutorials, forums and general experimentation with the Hammer map building tools that come with Half Life 2."
-You poor thing, having to learn how to map like everyone else

Anyways, map looks nice - maybe a bit too "boxy" -square and plain.
Maybe add some decals, more props.
And I dont really understand the layout of the mall - the one big room with little box stores within. Never seen a mall like that.
I also don't understand the purpose of the giant crates in the courtyard, and is that a trainstation I see? (the pic with the horse)

Yes, the map is boxy but doesnt feel like it so much due to the layout. You would have to play it to see what I mean.

The one big room is in fact a store that has the display stands. We have them here in the UK. as you can see each stand has its own products such as seating, bathroom, kitchen and furniture.

The crates in the courtyard are actually part of a warehouse area where the stores stock will arrive and then get distributed to the stores. Remember the map is a small section of a bigger shopping district.

Due to the poor quality images you are mistaken in thinking there is a train station.

Im still working on the details and appreciate everyones comments. Thanks.

idea for the security place: make it look a lot less organised (shit fallen over everywhere) and have bodies sitting around that look like combine metro police.
Yea the map does look good. i like your patience. i dont think i would be able to go through all the model folders and find all those props. waayyyy to tedious for me.
I agree that is boxxy, but i also agree that the boxiness is broken up a fair bit.
Damn good for a first map
