It means: I think it's good enough to let it be a movie set

Well, bad news, for me anyway...i left it running for 48 hours before it finished, but it runs as slow as it did when i compiled it on fast vis for half an hour..i thought running it on full would change things but it doesnt. This means i dont have time to enter the comp, so thats a bummer after 2 months of work...but also i dont know how to opitmise the map anymore than i already have, so im not sure if ill ever get it running properly...at the moment im going to start on a new project and then maybe when my skills have improved ill be able to look back on this map and see where i went wrong and how to fix it. The only good news is that making this map tought me how to use the new version of hammer, so i can pretty much do what i want now. Crapcakes.

Good god man you still have time.

Make sure every brush that is not sealing anything or protecting from leaks in your lvl is a func_detail.

Next vis portal it up, there's an example map and tutorial on the hl2 sdk page this will GREATLY improve how well it runs:

http://www.valve-erc.com/srcsdk/Levels/performance_and_visibility.html

Next make sure there are no brush's cutting into each other, it sshould all be flush.

Were you can use a model instead of a brush do it.

If the model dsnt have physics properties and you dnt wnt it to be a solid, i.e just for show then make it a prop_detail.

Make sure every face tha isnt show is nodraw

Snap as much of it to grid (may not help but possibly might)

take out as many physics props you can with out altering gamplay.

Make sure each model is assigned the the cheapest type it can be, look here for more details:

http://www.valve-erc.com/srcsdk/Levels/prop_types.html

YOU CAN DO IT

now go go go go

you can read the excitement in the post.

anyways it would be a shame not to enter it into the competition, even if it is slightly un optimised, atleast it would still have a better chance of winning than nothing.

It looks like Alcatraz, only creepier and more advanced. Looks amazing, especially the lighting. I can't wait to kill you guys in there(and be killed by you).

Don't give up on it yet dude. Do what Signy said, and hopefully you can submit that piece on time. The lighting affects alone should at least win you something (sixpack, free hooker, bragging rights, whatever). The soft lighting on the second pic in your first post baffles me. Wish I could figure out how to do that...

Actually in that pic im standing behind a smoke source, hence the hazy-ness :)

I did do what signy said, i'd done most of it but i spent a good 3 hours doing more of it...the compile time wasn't reduced and the lag in the map only went down by about 5%, if that.

I'm defo not gonna get it into the comp now but thats not whats worrying me, id hate to spend so long on a map and not release it...ill continue playing with it...it might end up that i just take parts of it and put them into a new map and change the layout, i dunno yet. Its a right bugger, i like the map how it is it just doesnt wanna run for crap :\

Ah, a smoke source (I was tricked!). Well, if you get that lag part figured out, you should release it as a cs_map or a de_map instead. There aren't that many good source maps out there yet compared to all the DM maps (probably because of a certain contest...).
