For borrowing music for your mod can be verry expancive... a normal price would be around 2000 $ per track can be even more if from a famous artist.......
and dont use it if you dont have an agreement with the original composer or record label that has the copyrights even using a short fragment is also illigal.

try to find music cheaper by finding a composer who composes for free
if you ignore the rights of music you fuck the artist and have abig chance that they see you in court.......

funnily enough I've been dealing with licensing music for videogames at work today (for the next Need For Speed game) so I know all about this.

Music in videogames does not accrue royalties, instead companies (such as EA) pay a flat fee to license the track. In my particular case (which involves a very big act) the fee is around $4000.

Without a license to replicate/distribute the music, what you're doing would be illegal and I would strongly suggest you don't do it because major publishing companies are bulldogs when it comes to chasing up money, even the small amounts we're talking about here.

If you're after a particular sound/vibe, I suggest you get a composer to create an original piece that closely matches the sound you are after.

If your mod is good enough, you won't have any big problems with finding a suiting composer.

BTW. downloading music is not per se illegal, iTunes = downloading, other than that, there are many different rules in many different countries, here in The Netherlands it's legal to download MUSIC and MOVIES. Anti Piracy Mafia tries to brain wash the people tho, saying downloading = stealing , and stealing = a crime, but that's bullshit. Also, the Music Industry is one of the worst markets to work with, blackmailing, sue'ing etc. And the point is, those ENORMOUS music labels cry about piracy, but their own marketing is outdated. music labels are almost obsolete.

There is nothing more that I hate than Anti Piracy groups and Music Labels. I call them modern Mafia.

Downloading here can be legal in the netherlands....... and abouth the music industry indeed they are a bit outdated.....
here in the netherlands an artist gets around 20euro cents per sold cd.... so what happens wit the rest of the 19,75??
thats the truth about cd earnings... so it are the record companies them selves who cause the problem...

and about stealing i never used others music, textures, personages in my things i make....
ofcourse you can learn from game developers...... but not by stealing.....

Stealing means you take away something physical.

you found your awser... the artist has the rights on real life things but also digital content... as he is the creator and inventor... so in this case the one who holds the rights......

Things almost always work out just fine and if you really need some music; you can always make a thread here on 'lopers,

"MY MOD TEAM NEEDS PEOPLE WHO MAKE MUSIC" , but you CAN"T post ANY media, because; you know, when you are in need of people; DON'T EVER SHOW ANY MEDIA /sarcasme

If I am correct you have the rights to placing a song in to your mod if you brought the cd. But I would suggest asking them also you are promoting there song aswell

Sorry did not see how old this post was.
