Making music or listening to it? I'm going to assume listening to for this reply because if you're making music you don't really monitor though headphones unless you're DJing or something.
Gaming headsets from what I understand tend to be equalised a specific way to put emphasis on sounds such as footsteps, explosions, etc. A lot of these can make music sound like shit. If you're interested in getting a "proper" sound then.. anything* by sennheiser is good really. There are a few gaming headsets out there as well like the new Siberia headphones, they come with a mic as well. I've unfortunately no experience with these but I've heard nothing but good things to be said, I tend to stick with "monitor headphones".
I've gone through pairs of JVCs, Behringers, Sennheiser.. So much wasted money, damn these weak bastards.
* - By anything I mean most, of course check or try to check before purchasing and don't just go for Sennheisers. From personal experience I've not heard a bad pair, my brother bought a pair roughly ten years ago for DJing.. can't remember the model number but they still work like a charm. Cost him near $400 though.
